Embarcadero's over by the water. Depends on what you're looking for, but I stayed at Parc 55 in USW when I went last month. Great hotel, good location, IMHO. (It was my first time in SF though)

I don't know what are definitions you'll be operating under or what criteria you'd use to choose a location if you knew all the facts, so here are the Wiki pages.

If I were on vacation I'd probably stay near Union Square instead of along the Embarcadero.

Gonna be in Mountainview/Shoreline for a show

Got no plans for Sat/Sun (will be leaving sunday)

Check out some sights, check out some dispensaries, check out some bars, get wasted, eat alot.

A weekend of debauchery pretty much.
