About recharging newer digital cameras...

I have a pretty old digital camera, and it's photo quality has degraded so much it's time for me to buy a new one. One thing that always kinda annoyed me with this camera was when you remove the batteries to either recharge them or replace them, it would lose any time/date information so you'd have to remember to set that everytime. Do newer cameras have an additional onboard battery to save this date/time info so even when you swap the main batteries this info is saved?

I swap rechargibles in the Canon a40 all the time. I have never heard of your problem unless it's REALLY ancient.

What's the make/model?

Both my canons (S1 and 300D) both keep the date/time and picture number with a separate battery.

How do you recharge the battery, do you need to take it out or you can directly recharge with the battery in.

I've got an Olympus, the first model of their Ultra Zoom series.

nah - my Fuji S5100 still does that, and it's practically brand new.

I have one too. sigh

I've got to be religious about keeping the batteries charged.

I was thinking about buying the charger for the camera, so I never have to take the batteries out. Dunno yet though

strange...I've left the battery out of my D70 overnight (while charging it) and it hasn't reset anything.

So it looks like it's pretty much a feature dependant on the manufacturer. I've never seen a list of camera features mentions something like this though... do they have a specific technical word for this kind of feature?

Good thing though I live just outside Manhattan... planning to hit B&H photo for my new camera so I'm sure the guys there can tell me what cameras have such a feature.

I got an A300 that keeps the info as well, yay for round batteries that you replace like almost never...
