? about lighting a cold cathode w/o PSU

I plan on modding my PS2 with a cold cathode, but I don't know how I would supply power since it has to be connceted to a PSU to work. Anyone know of any converters? or any way to rig it to work via normal power? Thanks a lot

Assuming it's a 12 volt cold cathode tube, all you need is a 12 volt regulated power supply. This may seem big and bulky, but if this is on a bookshelf or in an entertainment center, then it really shouldn't matter.

If you are gonna mod your PS2 I would go with PC Mods mini cold cathodes here. I've been to their shop hundreds of time and I know them personally and these minis are as bright or even brighter as the regular ones. I don't know what the PS2 runs off of, but there should be some converters or you can get a slim powersupply or mini powersupply from somewhere. Good luck and happy modding! 🙂

Why in the hell do you want to put a neon light on your Playstation? Its not going to make the games any better. Everyone around here spends so much time making fun of ricers and all the mods they do to their cars, yet its okay to make the same mods to a computer or video game console? It just doesn't make sense. Why don't you put some rims and a Type-R sticker on your Playstation while you're at it. Hey! I bet a spoiler on the back would look great too!

Everyone knows adding neons makes your playstation's framerate increase :Q

actually, it's because I'm bored, and it's sort of my Hobby. I needed something constructive to do other than football which takes up most my time. I would much rather fool around with my PS2 and comp than go out racing cars and smokeing. I don't need that crIpe, I need something fun. Feel free to critisize all you want. I've noticed that many people have helped me out meaning A) they don't think it's stupid and B) they know what they're talking about. So maybe you're the odd one

12v wall wart, or

25v CT tranny, a diode on each end tap ( 1N4001 should be enough). Tie the + ends of the diodes together, and have a C-R-C filter. should be able to fit in the PS2 provided the tube doesnt draw too much current.

just splice the primary of the tranny to the 120v in of the PS2 (or do they use wallwarts? If thats the case you'll need another cord alltogether.

I can draw a scheme if you need it. Although filtering the 12v will bring it up to 14 or 15v.. maybe a 20v CT tranny would be better, or a 10v with a bridge. hm. yeah.

I have no clue what you just said, so I am just going to use a 12v supply. Seems the easiest. Thanks for your suggestions

The PS2 doesn't run on 120v, it steps it down to probably 12v, 5v. Take a meter and measure the voltage after the transformer inside the PS2 and see what it is actually running. Just don't die in the process. You probably don't need another power supply...
