Shouldn't take longer than two hours, which should be anywhere from $90 - $180 depending on your mechanic and locations + parts. So figure at MOST $200. Anything more would be way overpriced.

A timing chain is a timing belt, but it's metal, and well, a chain. It's in the same spot and is probably a PITA to get to. I'd say 14 hour is way off, maybe 5-6?

Call a couple local repair shops (or other nissan dealerships) and see what they say. All car places will give you an approximate estimate over the phone.

A timing chain is a timing belt, but it's metal, and well, a chain. It's in the same spot and is probably a PITA to get to. I'd say 14 hour is way off, maybe 5-6?

Yea I made a mistake, that should take about 4-6 hours, your right. About $500 sound right?

ok I've called about 4 different dealers... 3 said 14-14.5, one said 8 (but he didn't actually check.. he just said that.)


they all want $1300-$1400 to do the work... except my local dealer who is doing it for $780 w/ parts (long long story)

I don't know where you live, but shop rates around here are about $65/hr for independant shops and $95/hr for dealers. I wouldn't pay $780, but if you live in California, that sounds about right.

Ok, this really brings up the question.... Where the hell IS your timing chain? If (God only knows how) it was somehow up by the firewall I might see how that could be, but jesus that wouldnt make any sense....

Unless for some strange reason they need to pull the engine out to get to the chain, I just cant see it taking more then half a day.

It may be that since the engine has to be dropped and some of the body work has to probably be removed to do the replacement that they consider it a 2 man job. So it would take 2 people 1 day to do it thus the 14 hour quote.

Still pretty pricey, but as the engine basically has to be removed, maybe not too unreasonable.

Chains need replacement after 90-100K miles i believe. 14hrs is bullpoop. Go out and buy a Chilton manual and do it yourself. You can't tell me your time is worth that much cash.

no it's not; I just literally do not have the time to do it.


I have plenty of auto repair experiance.. I replaced the clutch on this thing like two years ago... now with a job that demands 60-70hrs a week on top of a 15/hr a week school load... I literally do not have the time to do it.. I can't take two days or even one full day off school and work

I believe you're wrong.
90-100k sounds more like a timing belt change interval (although some recommend 60-80k).
Otherwise, there'd be no benefit in a chain over a belt.
Chains should last the life of the engine.

I have 2 Sentra's, one with 105k, the other with 140k.
Having changed the timing chains on either of them, yet.


OP, how many miles do you have on the engine?

$800 for a timing chain job seems about right. At the dealer, that's almost a steal considering they use OEM parts.
