About how many 1 MT nukes would it take to effectively destroy the planet?

You dont have to destroy the planet and the nukes do not have to be that strong. If you make enough fallout the area the fallout covers is the contaminated zone. Plus the prevailing winds spread the radiation cloud. So you dont have to acutally destroy the planet only contaminated enough of it. Chernoval destroyed crops and damaged cattle hundred of miles away. Still it would take a lot of nukes. The devices we have today are capable of carrying around 16 individual smaller warheads. You could probably contaminate all of New York city with one missle.
