You can use any two NICs, they dont need to be the same brand or anything. As long as they are both good NICs, there should be no benefits to one way or the other. I recommend Intel PRO/100+ cards which can be picked up for cheap on eBay.

You can have two different models, I dont think it makes a difference really. As long as they are the same kind of NICs.

I'm pretty sure make or model (hahah...sounds like we're talking about cars) does not make a difference. Just make sure they aren't conflicting -->sharing IRQs. I guess you're planning on being the "server" for multiple computers. Good luck with that.

Your options are pretty wide open.

Some home users like to use different brands to make it easier to differentiate between them when your setting up your ICS.

My server actually has 3 NIC's in it right now.

Go with Bens advice. Dual nics isnt hard, but dont use the exact same ones, or its a b*tch to differentiate between them. And that way, you can use one for wan access and one for lan, as an example. And when one side isnt working, you know right where to start troubleshooting.

Or you could get one nic that is actually 2 nics. I use a couple at home. Intel makes em, I forget the model tho. They also make a VLAN nic that has an intel procesor on it for many virtual connections.

Yeah, I'm using 2 NIC's right now both are Intel Pro 100+'s. You can modify the drivers to make one NIC have a diff name than the other.
