Abnormally slow 4k read/writes. Normal?

Hey guys,
Recently got the Kingston ssdnow v+100 series. I've noticed 4k read/write benchmarks scores are extremely low, especially when compared to numbers the drive is capable of.

My mobo uses the AMD SB710 chipset. I've done the tests before and after applying various Windows 7 tweaks with consistent results. AHCI and Trim is on...I've tried it with default Microsoft drivers and AMD ones, same results.

One thing in particular: while testing, the write speeds of both the 4k's seem really inconsistent (jumps around a lot especially in the beginning anywhere from 0.4mb/s~110mb/s)

Is this normal? Is it my mobo's fault? Or is it an ssd defect?

Have you tried another open SATA port?

I didn't really have to set anything when I installed mine except for ACHI, and the Windows 7 installation pretty much took care of the rest. Only thing I had to do after that was disable SuperFetch.

I'd probably RMA then.

Run the CrystalDiskMark benchmark and see if the scores show low there as well.

not really sure what a fast sata chip baseline comparison would be with that particular drive, but I will say that particular AMD chipset is weak to begin with. I doubt AMD raidxpert(yes, it can be used for single drives too) will work with that older chip, but may be worth a try as it can give noticable speed increases with NCQ/write caching.

i did some more research: apparently there are others getting these speeds. that's good news for me...i just wanted to know if it was defective or not (don't want to RMA after loading windows and all of that...that would be a pain). i guess this just means this drive really isn't the best..but that's fine with me; i'm happy with the overall speed boost it has given my computer.

are you sure these are abnormally low? it is very much a budget drive and not the best SSD around. (you can tell from the name).

It is a lot faster then a spindle drive... but a lot slower than top of the line SSDs.

I need to read a lot more reviews -- thanks for that. I didn't realize there was that much of a range between them. Was just comparing to the scores I've been getting with mine (which seemingly everyone around here concerned about performance describes as "slow").

The OP's drive was a dog when it was purchased.

yeah don't get fooled those older generation controllers had stutter and sucked butt. they still sell them. just like the buggy sandforce sf-1222 drives. plenty of them on the market. plenty of returns. very easy to flash those puppies back as new and put them back out for sale know what i mean.
