Does this use the RIMM 4200 RAM? I'm assuming so since it only has 2 slots. I wonder if/when you'll be able to buy one and how it will compare to the i850E.

I believe that the SiS R658 chip is duel channel RDRAM, like the Intel i850E, so its up to the motherboard makers to choose between 16bit and 32bit. The one pictured does seem to be of the 32bit varient and I hope that it is the one that enters production. I dont know why they dont say up front that its going to be RIMM 4200/4800.

GO 32BIT RDRAM!!!😀
 
Not many people on this board seem to care about RDRAM in genneral let alone 32bit, hard to stirr up a conversation.
 
32 bit RDRAM is wonderfully inexpensive in 256MB denominations (see googlegear, like $90) compared to its 16-bit brother, but that leaves you a max of 512MB, which is undesirable. And the 512MB sticks are expensive. Still, if you're planning on starting out with 512, 32-bit RDRAM is attractively priced.
 
512 undesirable? Tell me for what reason most people would want/need more than 512? I have 512 and never use all of it, ya maybe some time down the road we will need more but probably by then they will have reasonably priced 512 RIMMS anyways?
 
Yeah I know - RDRAM's had it's day in the sun for now. Mabye SIS will continue making chipsets.

Microsoft designed Windows XP to run ok on 128, and things run well on 256. I think there are 2 reasons I don't need more than 256 now:

1.) I don't use any of the extremely limited number of applications that benefit from 512+
2.) I disabled all those icons in my system tray and only have 14 services running when nothing's open. I recently disabled all the startup stuff on a friend's computer. I could have told him I installed a memory upgrade and a faster processor and he would have believed me.

By the time something comes out that really needs more than 512MB or 768MB everything else in my system will be useless anyway.

Anyway, can you actually buy PC1200/RIMM4800 RDRAM yet (Samsung rated chips, not overclocked stuff)?
 
No I dont think any PC1200 or RIMM 4800 ram is out yet, when it does comes out it will probably hit the news and be benckmarked everywhere.
 
It is out. Look for OCZ RIMM4800. It's on their website and it's on pricewatch... just no one seems to care anymore.

As for 512 not being enough, well, that's what I mean, it's about enough for today's apps but some people like more, and many on this forum have reported that the latest games such as Battlefield 1942 will suck up 512 and improve performance with 768 or 1024. Plus, for memory-heavy applications such as Photoshop or DV editing, 1024 is considered the standard.

512 is about enough for today's applications but with falling DDR prices many are going to have more soon and the performance difference is going to start showing itself. At least IMO, 32-bit RDRAM would do well to become as cheap in 512 denominations as it is to buy 2 sticks of 256.
 
Im shure thats just Oced PC1066, ill wait till Samsung sells it

Why does 1942 use up so much memory, doesnt look that great, must just be POS programming
