Been a while since I posted any questions on this great forum.

My friend would like to build an AMD system. I am thinking about recommending the Abit NF7-S (Newegg has them on sale for $89 today) after reviewing a lot of threads here in this motherboard section.

He has this ATI GL X1-128 video card he wants to use with it, but I'm having trouble figuring out if this will work with this board.

Also, what processor should I have him get with this board?

I'm thinking about using this Thermalright SLK-948U after the good luck I have had with three SLK-800 units on my 1.33 and 1.66 Ghz AMD socket A's.

Thanks for your help!

ok first the thermalright SLK-948 is not compatible with socket A processor so don't make that mistake! try the SLK-900A or the SLK-947U.

The motherboard is a good choice, I believe that it's one of the best board for socket A CPU's.

The Fire GL will work, if it's compatible with agp 4x slots.

For the processor well get one of these new Mobile Athlon XP's, if he wants an overclocked system if not then get him a barton 2500 or 2800.

anything else?

The Thermalright SLK900a or U or the SLK947 are great cooling choices with the NF7-S. For the processor, just buy a mobile 2400, 2500 or 2600, even if he doesn't plan to do some radical overclocking. Just set the fsb speed in bios to 200 and the multi to 11 and set vcore to 1.65v and he will have an instant XP3200 for cheap. He'll probably even be able to back the vcore down more and still stay stable too, which will make for one cool running rig that performs great. Just make sure he gets some quality DDR to go with it, preferably (in my book) Corsair or Mushkin or Kingston.
