abit nf7-s is not seeing amd 2500 barton processor. In bios it saids the cpu is unknown and has the speed at 600 mhz even though i can up the speed if i want to. i updated the bios to the lastest version but it didnt make a difference. Also bios is seeing the hardrive but when i get to the command prompt i cant find it. Drive C is the ramdisk one and drive D is the cd drive and after that there is no more drives. I doubled checked all the wiring and even tried the coms jumper thing but that still didnt help either. The motherboard is brand new, just got it today. The cpu has been working before this without a problem.

Is the hard drive NTFS formatted, or not partitioned? That would explain command prompt not seeing it.

As to the CPU thing... Not really sure there. Can you change the settings and get it to run at the real speed for a 2500?
Probably 200MHz FSB, and 9x multiplier.

when i went to partition the hard drive the propmt came up and said no disk space. Im really worried about the cpu thing because i dont see why a new socket A motherboard cant reconize a amd xp cpu.

If it's a mobile, I believe you have to set everything manually. That's what I had to do with mine, anyway.

yup sounds like a mobile AthlonXP. What are you booting to a command prompt with? sounds like you are booting with a win 98 startup floppy or something.
Drive C is the ramdisk one and drive D is the cd drive
definately a win 98 startup disk.
Was the drive previously used in another system? If it was and was partitioned and formatted as NTFS booting to a DOS command prompt won't see it. Sounds like it is already partitioned. what are you trying to partition it with? Sounds like you are trying to partition with fdisk. Why? what OS are you planning to install on it? I certainly would put any win 9x OSs on it.

My diagnoses on the drive is that it has already been partitioned and formatted in NTFS most likely from a previous install of win XP or Maybe win2k. For whatever reason you are trying to format it with a win98 boot floppy. You need to get rid of the old partition before fdisk will do anything for you, although I can't imagine why you want to use fdisk. throw your winxp or win2k cd in the cd drive and boot from that to partition, format and install your OS.

NesuD your 100% right and yes its a mobile processor. The thing is my old ecs and msi motherboards read the cpu just fine. I dont get why this one wasnt.

it will come up as unknown processor, there is nothing you can do about that. but you have to manually set the FSB and the multiplier like suggested aboev

My Mobile Barton isnt recognised by either of my NF7-S Rev 2.0's. I dont particularly mind. I manually set the FSB/Multi and its fine.

Its not as though Im running at stock :D

The processor is fully functional on the board, so does it really matter if the BIOS can not correctly identify the CPU?

Too late now, but you would have been better servered to buy a faster vid card and keep the 2500+ and ECS/MSI combo for gaming. Since you already have the board though, and have a weak G4MX that will force you to play newer titles@low res and settings, go ahead and shoot for a good overclock because@low res no AA/AF the CPU will be loaded more. 2.2ghz i.e. 3200+ speed should be cake with that mobile. Even with stock cooling because it shouldn't take much voltage to get there stable, 1.5-1.65v should be plenty unless your's is a real dud. One of my systems is a 35w 2200+ mobile@2.5ghz in the same board and I also have 2700DDR so I used the multi to overclcok and left the fsb&ram synch@DDR333.

The try 200X11 as you may not even hit that depending on the RAM
