Abit NF7-S. Chipset fan sounds like it's going to explode.

You'll need to probably remove your motherboard. Other than that it should be very easy to install.

Not at all. Just slide the mounts into the rails on the heatsink and push the clips through the board. Easy as can be.

If you dont use the onboard sound, I've found that it runs perfectly fine without the fan running.

Yep, very easy to install, too. I love not having to worry about the fan anymore.

Well, it voids the warranty apoppin. Just like modifying the cooling on a video card. Too me the benefits of improved quiet cooling far outweigh the benefits of a warranty. :p

Plus, if my NF7-S dies it becomes my opportunity to upgrade to a S939 system.

personally, i'd hate to RMA my MB just for a noisy fan . . . hence my regular cleaning of my NB fan and a drop of oil (think that oil voids the warranty?)

i want MY IC7 to survive until sli capable MBs . . . i might need it 'awhile' longer. ;)

Um . . . how does it affect your Abit Warranty?

I have an (abit) ic7-g with a NB fan that gets 'noisy' . . . it NEEDS to have th dust cleaned out of it regularly or i can hear it progressively complain louder and louder . . . :p

. . . a drop of 3-in-1 oil under the label worked wonders. ;)

Well it sounds like it is hitting something. The sound changes when I press/touch the housing.
I do use the onboard sound so I need cooling.

Do I have to take the MB out? That is a major pain. It looks liek the fan is mounted with some kind of spring loaded plastic fasteners. Can these be pulled out or do they unscrew?

I've got the same heatsink on my NF7S. Wasn't quite that easy to mount actually. You have to perfectly align those 'arms' with the hole in the mobo and then hope that it stays there as you begin to install it. It's not a very secure attachment unless you use some sticky thermal glue.

mine sounded the same . . . unbelievable, really LOUD.

Cleaning out the embedded dust and a drop of oil took 'care of it'. ;)

it looks like i'd have to remove my MB to get at the chipset fan. . . . not looking forward to it.

I might not have to remove the MB I hope. Can I just pull out the spring loaded fasteners?
Basically: How do I remove the fan?

Those spring loaded fasteners are anchored on the other side of the board by spreaders. You would have to cut the black post on the surface to remove the stock cooler.

And the fan is screwed into the heatsink. The screws are tiny, a real pain in the butt to deal with if the mobo is still in the case. I went that route (oiling the fan) prior to removing the stock cooler and installing the NB47J.

I'll just try to oil it then. I belive that can be done while it is still mounted.

Thank you for your advice fellas.
Here are some  and :cookie::cookie:

I put a TT Blue Orb on my NB. You could probably mount one of those w/o removing the mobo from the case. Just clip the spring hold downs on the current fan, and then remove the old fan. Attach the blue orb, or whatever cooling you prefer using thermal tape, and you're good to go. If you're not doing some serious high FSB oc'ing it should work just peachy.

Problem solved.

I removed the cover over the fan, removed the sticker on the back, put a drop of oil in there and covered with normal scotch tape.
Put back the fan without the cover and applied a small drop of epoxy to hold it in place.
Next time I'll just remove the fan and change it. Shouldn't be to hard to remove considering the small amount of epoxy.

I thought it was epoxied, so I didn't touch the fan. Kind of kicking myself now that the rig is set up, I have to disassemble it later to swtich to the Zalman 47.
