Abit KT7A-Raid problems???

OK...here's the situation. I have an Abit KT7A-RAID board with 512MB SDRAM, AMD T'bird 1GHz, 46.5GB IBM HDD, Leadtek GeForce2 GTS Pro graphics, etc.

A few weeks ago I noticed that the fan noise was significantly diminished inside my case. Upon inspection I found that my graphics card fan had quit alltogether. Leadtek was wonderful...standing behind the card and sending me a brand new GTS Pro. I popped it back into the machine and I still get the diminished fan sound and no beeps...rebooted and the fan sounds came back to normal...even a long beep, but still no video.

So I am wondering...does this sound like a problem with the KT7A...or perhaps with my AMD T'bird...or ??? Everything was working fine until the fan on the GTS stopped...now nothing seems to work correctly. All the fans are spinning (heatsink fan, graphics card fan, case fans x 2, northbridge fan). Seems strange that at first no boot up "beeps"...then one longer than normal beep on one of my boot up attempts...but all the time no video. I even swapped out monitors to see if that might be the problem, but neither monitor lights up.

Any suggestions???? Could it be a failed memory problem? Any suggestions will be most welcomed. I really don't want to have to buy all new parts swapping out one part at a time until I find the culprit...but that may be the only solution.

Thanks for the input ahead of time...chaplndave

Do you have another vid card to swap in? One long beep while booting indicates some error - but not sure what. One long beep followed by two or three short beeps indicates bad vid card memory.

Agree with VotTak that you should reseat all the cards in your system, just one out of position can hose you up.

Just to let everyone know...I have decided that due to time constraints (daugher's graduation from college and wedding, and son's graduation from high school) and money constraints I have decided that rather than troubleshoot, removing and replacing one piece at a time, I would just replace the motherboard with the IWill XP333-R board and one stick of Mushkin PC3200 that I had been planning to do anyway. Also, when I removed the Abit I did notice what I thought was some "scorching" around one of the transistors or capacitors...or whatever it was, so I am thinking it may have been a main board failure. The board is only about a year and a half old so I don't know if Abit would stand behind it yet and replace it...but then again...not sure I even want to replace a board with a 133 chipset.

Haven't had time yet, with all the goings on, to fire up the rebuild, but when I do I will try to post back here and give you all of the particulars. thanks to all who have read and have posted suggestions.

i remember that beep................ but the reason i had that beep is due to not plugging in a fan for fan1 pin on the motherboard... (a protective mechanism or something)......... the other beep i remember is due to the video card...

does your computer stay on or does it turm off automatically?

UPDATE: I decided not to fool with troubleshooting the Abit board as I had an IWill XP333-R board and a stick of Mushkin PC3200 DDR lying around. I have rebuilt the box with the motherboard, memory, a 1GHz Athlon T'bird (will update sometime in the future), floppy, CD-ROM, and a 75GXP IBM 46.5GB HDD...oh yea, and the new GeForce2 GTS Pro card that Leadtek just sent me.

Once I had everything in place, starting out with just the graphics card and the above pieces, I decided to plug it in to see what would happen. NOTHING HAPPENED!!! ...and then the two case fans and the northbridge fan went on really quietly with the processor fan starting a little and stopping, starting a little and stopping. Needless to say, I shut everything down pronto! Does this sound like a power supply problem to you? That is the only thing I can figure out. The fan on the proc was not working...not really, and the fan on the graphics card never did turn. With the other fans on so quiet I had to look to see if they were really spinning, the only thing I can figure is that they are not getting the power they need.

Any suggestions or tips????
