This is a completely new system Everything is new.
Here is the problem: When I go to install Windows 2000, it will format the
partition just fine, but when it does the initial file copy, approximately
half of the files give an error initially. When retried approximately
two-thirds will copy, but at least one-third simply refuses to copy.
Here is my hardware: Abit KT7A-RAID with Athlon 1333 MHz proc. 256 MB
Corsair CAS2 RAM. Two Maxtor 20gig 7200 RPM ATA100 drives. Hitachi DVD
drive. ATI AIW Radeon.
Here is what I have tried: Initially, setup as one would expect with both
drives on the RAID in a 0 config. Then split the drives and tried each as
the boot drive. Still same problem on all counts. Okay, so I moved one of
the drives to the normal IDE controller. Same thing. Swapped the CD-ROM
with an old one known to be working in another machine. Still same problem.
Flashed the BIOS to 3C and used updated HPT drivers for initial install.
Same thing. ARGH! Tried a million different variations in BIOS settings to
no avail (this was prior to flashing. Once I flashed, I left everything at
default except things absolutely necessary)
At this point, the only thing that I have not swapped out is the video, but
since it is not even trying to go into GUI mode yet, I cannot imagine that
that is the problem. Could be a bad motherboard I suppose, but I would have
thought at least ONE of the IDE controllers would have worked. My hope is
that there is some obscure BIOS setting that I am missing that is causing
the write errors to the hard drives.
If ANYONE has any input I would be ever so grateful as I am at a complete
loss, and this is a system that I ordered for my father-in-law. My
reputation as super-genius is taking a real beating here! <g>
