ABIT KT7-RAID won't boot up from RAID 0 or anything else

I an ABIT KT7-RAID with 1GHz Thunderbird running Win98SE off of the RAID-0 controller (2 x 40GB WD 7200 Ultra DMA 100 drives). The machine was booting fine until recently. I tried booting up but after the POST it just sits there trying to boot and does nothing for about 15 mintues. Finally it comes back telling me that the following files are missing or corrupted: "himem.sys, emm386.exe, dblbuff.sys, & ifshlp.sys".

That is all fine and dandy, so I thought I would just reinstall my OS (I have nothing of importance on the C drive anyway). However, I cannot even get my machine to boot off of a boot disk or CD. It gives me the same errors (after about 15 minutes of course). I tried playing with the boot order and putting the RAID array as the first boot system and nothing...did the same for floppy and CD and no change in behavior. 😱

I have no idea what to try next. Any suggestions or help is much appreciated. Thank you

Are you overclocked? It may be overheating and giving errors. I used to get errors similar when I was too far overclocked and could not install OS.

I am not overclocking actually... It is running at FSB of 100 x 10 just like it is rated for.

As for pulling the RAID that would mean wiping other partitions...where I do have stuff that I want. I guess that would be my last choice. I usually partion my drive so that I only have the OS and some programs on the C drive so that I can use Norton Ghost on it when it screws up or something and still have all my important stuff on other drives (partion).

So I guess, I am hoping for something else. Thanks though

My last attempt at getting some advice before I lose everything on those drives...Lots of pictures and MP3s on those other partitions, so I am very reluctant to just pull the cable on the RAID array... PLEASE! I am desperate here. Any and all advice is much appreciated.

Thanks for the link. I have taken a look at the info there but unfortunately it does not really deal with my problem. I did however find some info about problems with ABIT KT7 boards and Western Digital drives at Western Digital's Support Site. It sounds like it could be some kind of incompatability problem, but the strange thing is that I have been using these drives with this board in this exact configuration for about 15 months now with no problems whatsoever...WHY now?

The other strange thing is that I tried unplugging the drives and booting from a floppy and it worked just fine...of course telling me that it did not detect any hard drive. Then I plugged the drives back in and was able to boot from the floppy (previously it would just hang after saying that it was starting up Win98SE). I was able to see the info on all of the partitions and everything. I was so happy and thought the problem had been fixed, but sure enough the next time I tried to do it, I got nothing. UGH!!!

Strange...By unplugging and plugging the HDs I was able to boot up with a floppy. Sure enough everything was still on the drives. So I used a Norton Ghost image and overwrote the OS to the C drive. And VIOLA, everything is fine again. I don't understand but hey I am happy that my machine is back up and running. Anyone ever have a problem like this?

Thanks for everyone's help
