I just got a abit kt7 with a 900mhz athlon. I could go online and surf the net, but I can't play any games or run any multimedia like Mpeg videos. Whenever I try to play a game it would just freeze. I thought it was my video card because I can run apps just fun, but now it seems even some apps don't work, like running Word2000 would cause windows to freeze. Anyway, I bought a new video card to see if that would help fix the problem, but it didn't, it still kept freezing whenever I load a game or play an mpeg video. I tried almost anything I can think of. I have no clue what's wrong with my comp. I also installed directx8, could that be the problem? Also my power supply is only 230 watt, could that be the reason why it's not working? But, how come I can go online and run internet apps, like ICQ and internet explorer? It can't be the video card because I just got a new one today and it still freezes. I think it might be the motherboard. I'm not sure at all. Have anyone had this problem before? I tried installing new drivers for the motherboard and it still doesn't work. I have a generic brand memory chip, could that be it? I don't know. I'm so lost. Anyone out there have any advice??? Please, I need help!

Couple things.....

First, are you overclocking? If you are then this could lead to a whole slew of problems. However, your post doesn't seem to indicate overclocking so I will continue....

Sounds like you might have a Vortex 1/2 sound card. If you do, this is most likely the problem. They will cause all kinds of problems. I had to upgrade (I use the term loosely) to a SBLive!.

Might be memory. For a test set it to 100mhz, no interleave, CAS 3.

Might also be ACPI. Search the forums. There are a lot of posts about it.

That is all I can think of for now. If you have any updates post them and we can try to work one this a bit more.

Good luck,

What kind of h/s and fan do you have for the processor.mundane things like internet and ICQ don't require a lot of cpu power, but when loading some M$ bloatware and games it pushes the processor harder, thus causing more heat.

What video card are you using?
If it's a Geforce based it might be lack of power, they require quite a bit of juice to run.

no it's not overclocked and my sound card is an old Diamond Monster Sound. Apparently Diamond doesn't supply any new drivers for my sound card anymore, not even old ones. But is that Diamond monster the same as the vortex you're talking about? Anyway, I'll try changing the memory settings and check out the ACPI and see what happens. I'll keep you posted. Thanks!

I just use stock fan/heatsink. Is that bad? My video card was a voodoo 3, but now my new video card is a Geforce2 mx from creative labs. is my power supply too low?

I will bet it is that Diamond Monster Sound. Try disabling it in the device manager and then play some movies / games. Bet you will be completely stable. The symptoms that you are describing match my Vortex 1 sound card problems identically.

I think it's either that you have agp 4x enabled, maybe set up the driving control manually or simply run at 2x, But the 230 watt p/s definately has to go. 300 watts minimum required.

Nih,

<< 300 watts minimum required. >>

How can you make a statement like that? That is totally and completely false. I remember reading someones post that they had Duron in a extremely small case with not many devices in it run on a 150w power supply. I myself ran for several months with zero problems on a non-amd approved 250w before I upgraded to a new case. I have a friend that runs on a 230w supply. As long as the power supply is AMD approved and can handle the amount of devices you have you should have zero problems regardless of the w ratings. Even without an AMD approved power supply you may be alright too like I was, but it isn't guaranteed.
