Abit KR7A Raid mobo. Can u hot swap drives?

Building a new computer. Need redundancy and looking at using Abit KR7A Raid mobo with 2 drives using RAID 1. Can I hot swap 2 WD 120gig HDs if one fails? Any troubles using Win 98SE in this setup? Looking at the AMD Athlon XP 1700+ for cpu.

Thanks.

Thanks for the replies.

What would I need to be able to hot swap drives in case of a failure?

I run a webpage and a busy BB and need quick recovery if HD crashes.

Hot swapability is not a feature of ANY IDE drive. Thus, if you truly need it, go the route of SCSI. Sure, the RAID on SCSI is horrendously expensive, but you can just yank drives out, put another in and keep going. Its pretty neat.

The HPT 372 controller DOES support hot-swap. What you need is a couple of removable caddies which support hot-swap too. Shouldn't be a problem and I can't see why it shouldn't be recommended...?

I got them Enclosures 🙂 There's a key that turns the power on and off to it...but I CERTAINLY haven't tried it yet w/ my WD 100Gig! 🙂 I'm going to try it out w/ some crappy ones first 🙂

U got a linky supporting that statement? I'd REALLY like to hot swap stuff...but I'm too much of a wus to try it yet...and haven't done the above yet either 😀

did U try it yet? Y on EARTH R U running 98SE on THAT kinda of a system? DANG...@ least run 2000Prof on it 🙂 or Linux or something...but that's tough to learn 🙂 hehehhe

I agree Uuplaku However, if U have it in an enclosure like OpalFrost98GT had...then U can cut the power to it by turning the key...that would in turn shut it off...but I'm not sure how good THAT would be on it U know? I wonder if anyone's got a review on this enclosure and it's HOTswapability 🙂 It SAYS it's hotswapable on the box! 😀

Hit me @ anything on my sig w/ questions comments...I'll be on tonight after 7 or 8 CST 🙂

Tanner - here's a quote from Highpoint: "Total IDE bus tri-state by software control and supports hot-swap (Low signal Current)" and here's the link:
http://www.highpoint-tech.com/hpt372.htm.

Uuplaku - true, IDE drives are not in fact hot-swappable and this is why a hot-swap compatible drive enclosure must be used. If you do, no problem. Never done it myself, but seen it demonstrated several times.

As for whether it's good for the drive or not, surely that's not particularly interesting...? If you need to swap it, it'll be gone the way of the Dodo anyway, won't it?
