Have one on the way & looking through the manual it has a 24 pin connector but the manual says to leave pins 11, 12, 23, 24 off. Thats got me a bit (pun intended) confused. Is that a misprint or should I just use the 20 pin? It says it's compliant to the former 20 pin. Does that mean if you only have a 20 it's OK but if you have a 24 use it?

Exactly.
If you have a 24-pin use it, if you have a 20-pin use it making sure that you leave the mentioned pins unconnected.
& you also need to connect the ATX12V1.
