Ok, I just reinstalled Windows 2000 agian but on a different drive and I have noticed a performance lag. I just installed all of the latest drivers but for example I right click on a file and it takes 1 Min to load the menu. I adjusted the Registry but it was only marginally faster. I am running Windows 2000 with Service pack 4 and all the latest security updates. Here are my specs: Pentium 4 2.8C, 512MB Corsair, Quantum 60GIG drive, ATI All in Wonder 9800Pro, Abit IC7-G mobo. I got a PC Mark 2002 score of: 5356 CPU, 7869 memory and 678 HDD. I know my HDD seems to be lagging but it shouldnt be making my system this slow!! Does anyone have any idea why my system seems to be running slow? I havent O.Ced it yet and I have all the optimized bios settings. Tried changing IDE cables but nothing.

Oh forgot to add, the system boots with in 15 secs but takes 10 seconds for Norton Antivirus to load. EVERYTHING possible is updated.

Blame your hard drive....not your motherboard. Install Windows on a new HD, and see if your problem doesn't go away. I've never heard of a motherboard causing you system to be slow.

Well actually I have and even SEEN a MOBO cause a system to be slow. For example most dells I have worked with usually performed pretty well except one system, I think it was a XPS D333. Well It had a 333MHZ processor in it and performed like pentium 90. It was the slowest machine I've ever used, the sad thing was that I had worked with PII 266s that were much faster on other mobos. I moved the processor from that mobo to another and perfromed fine, so having a good mobo is a pretty big factor. It was sad because my friend was using the computer and thought that all PIIs performed this slow and it was a fresh operating system install. So about the Hard drive, I had it in a Dell XPS R450 (This system but original MOBO) with a powerleap 1.4GHZ processor and I never had this problem. Im even using the exact Hard disk that was used with that system, the Quantum 60 Gig drive. I thought buying this new mobo would be an upgade but Im having second thoughts. Im mean ATA 33 to 100, 1.4GHZ 100 MHZ FSB 2.8C 200MHZ fsb, AGP 2x to 8X. I mainly just moved all of my components from the old one to the new mobo because they were all top of the line. ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, Creative Audigy 2 ZX, 60Gig drive (I know its not top of the line but it is good). How can you explain the low CPU score?

Thats the thing, Im not sure if I should though. It seems to be running fine but why slow in certian situations? It was difficult to mount because of the way the case is setup so thats why im hesistant. Please can some one give me advice to speed it up? Anything!?

With a cpu that has hyperthreading you should be using Windows XP,since you're using Win2k and it doesnt know your other cpu is virtual that might cause a few slowdowns.

Good point. And disable anything you don't use in bios Like video!!, sata, IR etc.

Yea windows 2k detects that I have 2 CPUs. Do you know of any articles that discuss why I am having this slow down. Because I want to overclock this system but if it is slow normally clocked, it makes me wonder if there will be an improvement or not. I'll check back and see if HT is really slowing down this hog by disabling it for a bit.
