Abit HotRod w/ CD-R Performance Problem

I had an old 4x CD-R drive (HP 8200) and Ultra/ATA66 controller (Abit HotRod), so I decided to do a little upgrade on a new system (Dell Dimention 8100, P4). I installed the CD-R drive as the primary master on the new controller. Everything installed great, but when I'm burning a CD, performance on the PC stalls -- the mouse jumps inconsistently, and everything seems slow. Processor utilization stays at around 50%, but none of the running processes is using more than 2% -- it doesn't add up. Any ideas? Thanks!
