i could also babble on about my troubles with Abit and Asus but it won't change the fact that they also make many great models. it all depends on what people are willing to bitch about. i'm not brand bias(aside from AMD,i'll admit,i'm a fanboy), i'll buy whatevers cheapest and offers the most features.

you can think what you want to, but it still stands that a lot of people have problems with MSI. im not trying to change your opinion of the company, but a lot of people here have MSI problems, and thats undeniable.

Not to mention MSI's "default" FSB overclock on some of their current boards without even the user knowing...

I've used a few MSI's, and one still in my house, and I haven't had any problems with any of them either.

my K7T Turbo limited edition is still running with an Athlon 1.33 to this day... but yes I have heard the horror stories of people having problems with MSI. glad I am not one of them :)

My EPOX 8RDA+ died and the capacitors were leaking like mad. AOpen I have is extremely stable. I like that a lot.

Preface: not much Intel use since the K7.

What brand would you recommend people buy? Overall quality
Abit.
Shuttle, Iwill, Asus, Gigabyte, good, but have specific failings that can crop up. In the least 3-4 years, Abit boards have been good all-around solutions.

What brand would you recommend people buy? Most stable/reliable product
Shuttle.
Last few Shuttles I've used have been outstanding. No frills, but they worked. And even when I was afraid I'd totally killed it...still rock solid.

What brand would you recommend people buy? For the overclocker
Depends on the socket.

What brand would you recommend people buy? For the gamer
Abit.
Overall vs. gamer doesn't really matter when you can get no-frills fast boards that are very fast for very little premium.

What brand would you discourage people from buying? Unrealiable/often defective/problematic
ECS, Syntax, Amptron, etc.
ECS really wasn't bad until about six months ago. Now too many flaky and DOA boards.
Also MSI, as their boards are very much hit and miss.

What brand would you discourage people from buying? General lack of features
N/A. Every brand has boards that lack things you need, and for no good reasons.

tell that to my rock solid MSI thats been folding for 3 years straight and recently retired as my main rig.

brand zeal is stupid, ever motherboard maker has their good and bad models. there are of course a few acceptions, like PCChips.
I won't buy MSI because of compatibility issues and dying boards.
Yet guess what? There are three, of nine, PCs running in this house on MSI's boards. Hit & miss is as bad as always missing, when Abit, Shuttle, etc. just seem to work.

Thanks for all the great answers so far, but keep them coming people! :D

Once again though... this topic isn't meant to start a debate on what is right and wrong or what is best. It's only supposed to be opinions.

More more!!

Horrible in-store sales staff though. I'm fortunate enough to live and work close to 3 NCIX's locally and they have horrible horrible sales service. I still do go there because of the occasional good deals and wide selection. Their tech support people aren't bad though, I was pretty impressed.

Mostly for server motherboards.

I have purchased 4 Asus motherboards and all of them have been good quality overall and ran in a completely stable manner. Previously purchased Gigabyte and A-Open with good results. Had problems with moterboards made by FIC and Amptron.

me too, i was on newegg and the FRN2-L got like mostly ALL 5 star reviews.. I've bought 3 of these boards and everyone who has one is happy with it :) much like I am STILL happy with my SL-75DRV4 from like 2 years ago!
