I still haven't understood why we have advertising for prescriptions.
But as for them stating these side effects and risks, that's just required for advertising now. Some commercials try and dress it up and others just lay it straight, but all known side effects have to be stated.

It's not like you can walk into a store and buy this shit. And going to a doctor and asking for something by name doesn't seem right at all in my mind.

There are some bad doctors out there, yes, but... I'd much rather just let a doctor decide what was better for me based on my information, then give him a suggestion for something that might be bad for me.

Abilify is a scary drug. It was developed to help treat severely manic-depressive people, NOT your average depressed Joe. That's why the side effects are so severe -- this drug used to be reserved for those who could not function without it. The fact that the company is now trying to market it to everybody is absolutely disgusting.

look at it this way:
if you're suicidal, ABILIFY just might do what you've not been able to.

for real.

anti-depressants are a nasty prescription. For some they work great, but for many they can be disastrous.

depression, as a 'disorder', is something we know basically nothing about. So many people can share the same underlying cause, out of whack neurotransmitters, and all these prescriptions try and tackle those. But what we gotta get at is why are the NTs not balanced correctly? So many things can cause this.

To be labeled 'depressed', do you have to go to get an NT-level scan done, or is it something the doctor does by looking at your symptoms and deciding you are depressed? Because I think a lot of personality styles may just push one into feeling blue but isn't a true clinical case. And meds for these people are going to cause havoc in the brain.

I might have mild depression, but I very much dislike the idea of meds, and don't care to even find out. I also am fairly confident, and my doctor is too, that I have mild ADD, but one... again I hate the idea of prescription meds, and two, the Army doesn't want anybody with meds either.
Which sucks because I could totally use Adderall some days for school, but I don't need it to function or live normally. It's simply a school thing. I wouldn't mind being prescribed it while in school still, use it maybe 2 or 3 times a week, get better grades, and then stop once I get into my career. Because ROTC runs under Army health mandates, that isn't acceptable. At least, all the stuff I've seen basically says its grounds for disqualification, and who knows may be able to get away with it while in school but I refuse to take that chance.

People always spoof prescription drugs with horrible side effects. I remember seeing this ad on TV and I still can't believe it's real.

The really scary thing is permanent side effects from drugs like this, like tardive dyskenesia (inability to control muscles on one side of the face).

I don't remember what drug it is, but there's one w/ commercials now that lists two of the side effects as cancer and tuberculosis.

I'll take my chances with whatever disorder it that drug is meant to treat, thank you. Then again, I know little about depression, and some may not be able to function without it. For that, I consider myself very lucky.

The problem is these drugs are for people with severe issues, but as with everything else, they want them for everybody. It's like ADD meds. Nowadays, if a kid acts up in class, he or she has ADD. The overuse of meds only hurts the cases that truly need them.

My brother is bipolar with schizoaffective disorder. Among his meds, one is abilify (he's been on it for a while). It's remarkably effective, but as stated, it's for people with severe issues.
