When the show first aired I used to ONLY because I had the feeling of what it would be like to see the faces on my wife and kids. Since becoming disabled my dreams of ever having what they give some of these famlies is all gone for me. We will most likely never see new appliances, new cars, a new house, or even a better trailer then what we are in now. So it hit hard seeing how happy they all were and then it hit me that I will never see that from any of my family members and made me feel even worse about my/our situation. Great I am tearing up now reminding myself about it.

Can I get some cheese with my :wine: please to make me feel better 🙂

🙁 why don't you send in a tape to ty. he'll help you. i dont' know your whole situation but i hope that you dont' dwell on the negatives in your life and hold onto what is good which is your loving family and friends.

Not only that but IRS will come knocking come April 15th. All of the gifts are not free. Wait until they get tax bill of like $200K. Say goodbye to the new house and cool furniture.

I actually did send in in the begining but they have it where you need to also send in a tape and we didnt have a camera at the time and I was only able to write some stuff out and send pictures. Also I live in a trailer so not really to much to build on when you rent a thimble of land 😛
But I was screwed on the two points. No video to send in and no real land or home to work on. Shame too because we need alot of help in the home. I have a small gas leak we cant find. I had my neighbor go under and look and couldnt find it but the closet behind the hot water smells like gas (thought it was the HW vent so when we got our taxes had a new vent go out the top of the roof instead of out the side wall but made no change) , our cabinets are falling down , and our floor is coming apart.

As for the comment on the tax stuff I read somewhere that ABC will pick up the taxes on the new stuff as well.
 
It's definitely a cool show. The families that are on it all seem deserving, and it's kind of like winning the lottery for them. You don't go around saying lottery winners don't deserve their winnings, so you shouldn't put down these families for winning something they can't gamble away.

Besides, most of the families have lived through A LOT worse than *most* of us. The guy tonight was pretty deserving...losing your sight in the middle of your life, to a random shooting...terrible.

They do spend quite a bit of money. I'm sure most families could get by with a regular $200K home. But that isn't *WOW* enough for ABC...and Habitat For Humanity has that gig taken care of.

I live in a 2 bedroom trailer in North Hammond Indiana. We moved here from Joliet IL where we had a 7 bedroom house but was laid off from work 2 weeks before my son was born and 3 weeks befor christmas so there was no work to be had. I got a job in spring at a trans place and moved here to get our finances back on track because we used it all up and needed cheap living to do such. Only to get laid off that joba nd several others in the mean time to work from one company where we were starting to see light at the end of the tunnel to get per disabled trying to right up a 400 lb 55 gallon drum that was leaking hazardous fluid. That was almost three years ago and for the last 2 I havent had any treatment or medical needs and cannot till the lawyers and workers comp gets off their butts and help me.

I can tell you if it wasnt for the fine people here at AT we would have been homeless. It got so bad I ran out of my things to sell and was begging for diapers for my son because we couldnt afford them any more and alot of AT'ers came to our rescue. Right now were a hair away from being homeless and one small thing like my van breaking down will screw up because we dont have the funds to fix it and my wife wouldnt be able to make it to work. If gas keeps going up it will come down to milk for the kids or gas for the van and thats going to suck (thanks Bush).

Sorry for the story and putting up with my crappy spelling. I will try to fix it in a few.

ABC is using some iffy tax tricks by renting owners house at $50,000 a week during filming.

Actually this is one show that generates goodwill from me towards the sponsors. Sure there's heavy product placement and shameless plugs, but in this case I feel it's rightly earned.

I hate shows like this. It's worse than 20/20, Dateline, and other news show that used to show deformed babies and other hardship stories trying to draw sympathy.

Screw all these reality shows and bring back the dramas. Isn't it time for viewer backlash at crap reality shows?

As for the rest of you, I hope companies like ABC bare the burden or at least make them aware of it. I was hoping we were watching "Habitat for Humanity" on TV, or in other words, true altruistic behavior.

And even if you can avoid the IRS through some loophole (and ABC's loophole is something the IRS is considering closing) you still have state, local and property taxes. With some of the makeovers the homes are being revalued in excess of half a million and the property tax bills on something like that is well beyond the means of most of the people on the show. There was a big article in one of the financial papers about the bad tax situations most of the people were being put into by these makeovers. Getting your dream is a double edged sword.

Nope - I'm trying to be on my best behavior.

Actually I have certainly been known to get choked up over moving things in film and on TV - I just wouldn't have associated it with that show (though I readily admit I've never seen it).
