I'd bring you a 233mhz pc with 32mb of edo ram (I'd at least give you some parity "sh1t" and not be a total a$$hole).

If you wanted to "multi task like a robot" you could hit the "turbo" button on the front and STFU.

How about TRY being nice first instead of resorting to the measures you did. You have NO idea how burning that bridge may come back later to bite you in the a$$.

You and office politics = the lose

Meh, not everyone is like that, in my experience most aren't, in house tech support is a pretty good job, when I was younger and still did help desk, it was a great way to meet people, and I made a lot of friends, but sometimes people call up and ask for things that they don't need, like dual LCD's, or more RAM. I'm not saying that you don't need more RAM, but you have to realize as an accountant that it's not in the best interest of the company for tech to just hand out $100 sticks of RAM like candy to anyone who asks. If it doesn't significantly impact your ability to work, it just doesn't make sense.

Wow, he just really whooped your ass, bad.

You lose.

Dude, you're in ACCOUNTING. You shouldn't NEED more than 512 MB of RAM for things like Quickbooks and Excel! Stop opening up 14 tabs of sites like Fark and ATOT in Firefox at work, and you should be all set. Programmers and CAD folks need that extra memory... YOU don't.

So, in short, STFU or I'm going to delay your hardware upgrade ANOTHER year out of spite. You can plod away on your Pentium III for ANOTHER 12 months, while everyone in the secretrial pool gets those fancy new Intel Core Duo laptops. I think that I'll also run an audit on your network activity in order to find out why Firefox is sooo busy, and forward a list of those sites to your first and second line managers.

Cheers,
Your IT Staff - We hate YOU even more than you hate us 🙂

if it impacts his ability to work AT ALL then a hundred dollar stick of memory is well worth it.

You are an idiot, if I were him you would have 128 with 32mb shared on winXP. Firefox doesnt use that much memory. Mine seems to be using 48mb with multiple tabs open

ahhhh you should all work in Gov. IT jobs 😀 where they really DO hand out $100 sticks of memory to anyone who asks ^_^...accoutning people dont bitch when they have a budget so high they have to find new ways to spend it >) i cant think of a single person in my old office who didnt have at least two 19" LCDs and over 1gb of ram...😀

Funny, I've had 25+ windows open at a time and my machine at work ran just fine with just 384 MB of RAM. 512 MB RAM should be more than enough for a friggin' Accountant.

You're aware that there is generally a corporate specification for the computers used in certain positions, right? And that the spec is produced at least partially by the Accountants trying to keep the cost down? And that IT doesn't have the magic ability to over-ride that spec and spend money on upgrades for every schmuck that asks because otherwise there's no cost control? Oh, that's right, it's more convenient to create a strawman argument and blame IT for everything.

Here is the original post for those of you that missed it

I know most of you in IT think you are gods and everyone else is a moron. And you know what? You're right. Most people don't know jack shvt about computers. But you have to be careful how you treat people, because you will encounter the guy in Accounting who not only follows technology but has access to ATOT for the shvt he doesn't know. So if you're in IT don't:

1) Tell me that 512mb (with 8 megs memory shared) is more than enough RAM when I see in my task manager Firefox alone takes up 250 megs, and who knows how much the rest take up (visio, 15 excel spreadsheets, outlook, word, IE, Windows Explorer, Trillian).

2) Tell my boss I need to close programs I'm not using because he's going to come back at you and tell you you're an idiot because he's using me to do fvcking a million things at once and I'm a multitasking robot and I can get all the RAM he wants.

3) Try to fvck me over by giving me a 256mb upgrade because now I'm going to ask for 1.5 gb just to spite your ass (originally asked for 1 gig).

4) But most of all don't fvck with the Senior Accountant who happens to be a tech geek who happened to do IT audit at his last job and is now going to audit all your purchasing only TO FIND OUT YOU'RE BUYING all your shvt from 2 vendors, ONE OF WHOM HAPPENS TO BE YOUR friend's company WHO HAPPENS to be charging up the a$$ because now that Accountant is going to get quotes from other vendors and tell YOUR boss and MY BOSS (the controller) that you're spending on average 25% more than you can get from other vendors and 40% more if you had switched to Dell.

So guys in IT, let this be a lesson, be nice to people because the 1% that knows his shvt can call you out and make you look like a fool.

Cliffs:
1) Don't be mean to the guy in Accounting because he will audit your purchasing and make you look like a fool.

Also for you asshats who will ask "wtf are you using firefox for you shouldn't surfing at work" and "you shouldn't be instant messgaing at work":
1) I work at an internet company and I do a lot of ad hoc research on the web when I'm not doing accounting.
2) IM is the primary source of communication for the company

All my people in accounting have at least 1gb of ram and 20" widescreen lcd monitors...

CRM + enterprise level accounting software + 100+ excel worksheets open at one time = need lots of ram

large worksheets mean big wide screen.

it just make them more efficient workers. I don't see why any IT people would not want this....happy accounting department = happy IT department...

Not in management eh?

Why'd you edit your original post?

I think you should take your own advice though:

"But you have to be careful how you treat people," <---- Treat everyone(from the janitor on up) with respect. You never know when those connections will help you in the future. Working is really about making friends and connections.

How did you originally approach the IT Department for an upgrade?

Why is it that people always hate the IT Department? Their job isn't easy. Just as your job isn't easy. A little understanding goes a long way. I'm sure they can't just upgrade your ram on the drop of a dime. You have to fill out paperwork, make the purchase order, make sure you get the right kind, schedule someone to install it, ensure it works, etc.

It just annoys me daily, to read about how people have no respect for other people's jobs.

Real smart buddy... take the time to post on a site dominated by IT guys about how stupid IT guys are...

I bet you're a fantastic accountant...

stick to number crunching.
