Hi, I got a patch of soil in front of the house, protected by a metal fence (not chain link)... the patch of land is about 5 feet by 10 feet...

It's got drab looking shrubs, bushes, whatever... I want to brighten it up by next spring.. totally gut it out between now and Dec...

Anyone have gardening arrangment or whatever, experience can recommend how I go about setting up a varied bunch of plant life on that land to make it a presentable, bright and lively, organized, and meshes well with each other?

You want to gut it = concrete it over
You want garden arrangements = plant stuff and make it grow and be pretty

Make up your damn mind. Pick one. You can't have both.

you made your damn mind to think gutting meant changing the whole plot of land to concrete, wrong. i was talking about removing all the vegetation, leaving barren land for next season.

Depends if you want perennials or annuals in that spot. You could, very soon from now depending in where you live, put in some tulip bulbs for a nice surprise early next spring.

I don't know where you live in the US, so I can't help you with selecting appropriate plants. However...you need to remove all weeds and cultivate the soil. Add generous amounts of compost (like several inches deep if the soil is poor, turn it into the planting bed.)
