ABC seems to be good at picking up pilots that will have you hooked after the first episode. I think they're the only network that's ready for the Tivo generation of viewers. Anyways, I checked out a screener of "The Nine" and its looking really good.
First off, there is an all-star cast, which is always good for launching a new show (not great for maintaining one though--"Seinfeld", "ER", etc.) You'll recognize most of them from other shows. Tim Daly of "Wings" fame, Scott Wolf from "Party of 5", the gorgeous Kim Raver from "24", and veterans John Billingsley and Chi McBride. The first episode was also well-paced and fleshed out. Rather than focus on the action and intensity of the actual hostage standoff, they do a lot of character development, and leave the actual "crisis" plot for later episodes (so you don't really know everything that happened during the standoff.) Again, this will leave the opportunity for lots of flashbacks a la "LOST". Finally, I think this is one show that men and women will both enjoy, without being another crime drama.
