Garner to play widow's father in '8 Simple Rules'
By The Denver Post
James Garner has taken on perhaps the toughest roles in prime-time television this season, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The veteran actor will guest star in four episodes of ABC's "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter," as its makes the transition after the death of John Ritter, who played the show's harried dad and newspaper columnist. After taping the first three episodes, Ritter collapsed on the set of the fourth taping.

Garner will play the father of Katey Sagal's character, the widowed Cate Hennessy, who supports his daughter and three teenage grandchildren. Garner's character will be recently separated from his wife, who has not yet been cast. Production on the first post-Ritter episode, which will run an hour, is set to begin Monday. The first Garner episode is expected to air in the first or second week of November.

Pleshette to guest star on '8 Simple Rules'

Suzanne Pleshette will guest star on 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter when the show returns to ABC next month. Pleshette, late of NBC's Good Morning, Miami, will play Cate Hennessy's (Katey Sagal) mother in the hourlong episode, which will air Nov. 4. The show will follow the Hennessy family as it tries to cope with the news of father Paul's (John Ritter) unexpected death. Ritter died Sept. 11 after collapsing on the 8 Simple Rules set while working on the season's fourth episode. ABC decided to continue with the series and aired Ritter's final three episodes at the start of this season to very strong ratings.

In the show's return, Cate's recently separated parents - Pleshette and James Garner - will put their differences aside and try to help Cate and her three kids deal with Paul's death. Garner will have a recurring part in the show; it's unclear how long Pleshette will be with the show.

A better example would be how News Radio handled Phil Hartman's death.
That show went waaaaay down hill after Phil died. Such an awesome show.... 🙁

Yeah lovitz just wasn't the same

When ever a maun charector leaves it makes it very difficult esp. for a comedy.

You can kill off a charector but if the actor dies everyone knows why they aren't there.

Cheers was abnke to pull it off but coach was old. and they were able to get woody.

MJF leaving spin city killed that show.

The problem is it takes a while to get charecters to mesh and esp. iof the show has been on a while and we are used to the interaction of the charectors, you can't get them to mesh in one episode and audiences aren't gonna wait for it to happen.

Hartman was such a central character on Newsradio, they could have replaced him with pretty much anyone and I don't think it could have gotten better. Hartman had that charismatic evil going on. 😀

Wow...James Garner...wonder if he'll keel over after an episode or two? He's getting up there!

But, he was The Man!!

Rockford Files ROCKED!

Of course they'll move on with the show, as bad as it sounds, you don't think people will watch it just because Ritter passed on? Now that he's passed, things he's been involved with will get 10x the attention they used to.

I admit it. I'd never seen the show before, had heard of it, thought it had a stupid name. Watched part of one a few weeks ago...liked that "Grandpa" Garner knew to look in the Recycling Bin. Kids these days....

People are replying to them so I guess the discussion wasn't done, eh? Unless you live on these forums it's easy to miss posts you'd contribute to. Take even a few hours off in the afternoon and you can miss a hot 150 reply post after the regulars get bored with it. Sorry if it offends you that some people only check in and reply to what's on the screen during the hour or two they're on, that others get on once a week and browse the last 800 posts to see what they've missed, etc. It's a forum, not a chat service.

The thread is over 2 months old.

I use to watch the show, and I watched a couple of the new ones made after he died, but it's just depressing cause all they do is cry about him being gone so I don't watch it anymore.

I heard they're changing the name of the show next season to "8 Simple Rules for Dating my Mom"...and its all about how the three children deal with ther mother going out dating, and them getting all involved in her relationships.

Its going to suck.

that blonde girl in the show is hotttt on the show, but decent looking in real life

in conclusion...make up...not only makes ups, but makes wonders!
