ABC bittorrent not limiting upload?

I'm pretty new to torrent, and I've been downloading some stuff but the global upload limiter in ABC doesn't seem to be working at all. I can set them to anything and it still uses all my bandwidth. i've got 384kb/s upload, and I'm happy to let bittorrent use most of it, but I need a few KB/s so my surfing doesn't slow to a crawl and so my total download speed isn't getting screwed up by not having enough upload left over. also I have a few torrents where my ratio is like 400% and the individual torrent limiters aren't working either. what gives?

Never used ABC so 2 suggestions...

1) Use Azureus instead - the up-limiter works
2) grab netlimiter to throttle your entire PC's upload

well throttling my entire PC's upload would just make things worse. i don't care about my ISP or anything, i just need to have a little headroom to do my surfing and stuff.

i'll try Azureus when the torrents i'm working on complete. i really wanted to avoid it because i hate java with a passion, i hate everything about it. but if that's what it takes to get a client that works properly, i'll have to suck it up and give it a shot.

Netlimiter can be used to control specific applications - in fact, that's its main use, I didn't even realise it was possible to throttle your whole system. It works flawlessly.

Azureus is pretty sweet IMO. It gets better and better every release.

I've tried several clients, & the only one that actually limited the upload speeds was Azureus.

The other clients tend to have trouble following the settings you apply.

ABC works perfectly here, you might have an incorrect version.

The one thing I notice though, is that the minimum is set for each torrent and not the application so if you have say 4 files downloading, you need to set a limit on the 4 files (3K/sec is the lowest).
