Their original goal of those instant streaming options through the network sites or hulu was to open a new distribution method to reach people that weren't going to watch the shows on their TV. Basically, their hope was to add viewers without canibalizing any of the TV audience that watches through their network affiliates or through deals they get paid for (cable and satellite). If they make it easy for people to watch it on their TVs without going through the normal distribution channels the networks the affiliates or other distribution methods could view it as a way to cut them out of the loop and it could open the door for lawsuits.

Because of the way TV has previously been distributed there are some very complicated agreements which involve a great deal of money.

Trading dollars for cents, of course they are hard up for money, how many downloads does it take to pay for expensive prime time shows.

So the companies that pay for the production of the content should not have control over how its distributed?

There will come a day when everyone can operate a computer. (or a google tv appliance i suppose ;p)

This. There are a lot of details that need to ironed out. What stops Google from replacing ABC or CBS ads with their own? Is there revenue sharing? Content ownership? Etc...

Some shows on Hulu are actually showing the logo and channel number for the local affiliate, we had it pop up last week on one of the shows we watch. Apparently Hulu is tracking what local market you're in, I wonder if the local affiliate gets a share of the money from it.

Just another finger in the dike by networks still refusing to face the reality that the local network affiliates are dinosaurs eventully doomed to extinction. DirecTV viewers had to deal with this nonsense in the late 90's when CBS followed by the other networks forced DirecTV to no longer deliver national feeds to viewers based on Grade B viewing contours developed in the 1950's regarding what was acceptible OTA reception.

I bet using the google tv web browser hack that is used to get around Hulu's blocking will work with these sites also. If they don't want their programming streamed then don't host it, don't blame google for making it easy to view on your tv. These companies need to start adjusting their business models to be able to keep up with technology or they are going to end up like other media companies fighting a losing battle.

FUD sounding title to this thread, might want to update.

It does not affect the viewing of those shows through the broadcast TV part of Google TV, just the streaming of those shows to Google TV.

That web browser hack was already circumvented by Hulu.

It is like the whole regional codes for players and other media.

Granted that the content is not forbidden for one reason or another, why do they still feel the need to make you get a different disk in the US than GB? Why make players only play a particular regional code?

It isn't for safety or anything practical, it is so they can charge whatever price they want, apply whatever taxes they desire and keep media releases controlled much more tightly than if it was a true world-wide economy.


Same crap with this. They want to be the ones that decide what you see, when and how. They want to choose their sponsors both locally and nationally and they want to call the shots with licensing and distribution.

It is all BS, but the only thing that makes this different than genereic BS is that it is truly B$.

wow, companies who spend hundreds of millions on their product want to be able to control it. i'm enlightened.
