Abbas Pushes Militants to End Attack

" Abbas met late Monday with members of his own Fatah faction and hoped to meet Tuesday with leaders of the militant Hamas and other factions. The move came after Egyptian officials left for Cairo without a truce accord, failing to extract a pledge from Israel to stop targeting Hamas leaders for assassination."

Now if Abbas is successful and manages yet again to quell Hamas and get them to halt and cease fire, will Sharon again use the IDF to throw a rock at the hornets nest known as Hamas ? Thus undermining Abbas yet again and making Israel look like the victim as always. Will Sharon have the patience to allow Abbas to do his job or will he dismiss him and move along inciting more reactions. This will be intresting to say the least as it un-folds.

The US needs to step up and pressure Israel and Hamas both. Tell Hamas no more bombing, Israel no more attacks, period, first one to break that agreement deals with the US on a military basis. IF Hamas agrees to a cease fire we cannot allow Israel (Sharon) to act again.

They can all learn to live together, or die, seems to me it would be an easy choice, even if we have to make it for them.

Hamas needs to be removed they have the power in palestine. i believe the majority of palestinians woud trust hamas over abbas... Isreal and Abbas should gather forces inorder to remove hamas members with little to no casualities rather then Israel firing rockets into crowded areas.
IMHO the US should not get involved militarily.

The US will not get involved militarily, that would only add fuel to the fire. What needs to be done, and what would actually benefit the US is for us to use our influence to make Israel stop their indiscriminate attacks in residential areas. We always hear how "elite" their forces are, driving tanks over women is not elite, sorry.

We should pressure Israel to cede control to Abba's and start giving back the land even earlier than suggested, let Abba's take care of Hamas that would finally be in areas he had full control over, unlike now. If Israel does as they should, morally and legally, Hamas doesnt have a leg to stand on and will lose support. It's up to the US to make sure Sharon follows the line instead of destabilizing the process.

You are forgetting that Israel controls all financial assets of the Palestinian government and has had them frozen for a while. Israel also basically dismantled and destroyed all of the Palestinian defense forces. They will not release any of the much need funds needed by Abbas so he can rebuild the Palestinian defense forces. Yet they demand that he crack down on groups like Hamas which they continually incite through assassination attempts. Not to mention the fact that the man is up against a rock with an Israel leader who has vowed in the past to never allow a Palestinian state to ever exist while he is PM of Israel. Peace in the end for someone like Sharon means turning his back on his friends on the hardline right-wing and no more U.S. aid/tax dollars ( 3+ Billion dollars ) bank rolling the Israeli economy and IDF.

Bush reiterated his pledge to send U.S. advisers to train a new Palestinian security force that presumably would be more willing to crack down on Hamas. He also repeated his plea that Arab nations stop the flow of money to Hamas.

There were signs Sunday that Israeli leaders are heeding U.S. requests that they underscore their commitment to peace. Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said troops may be withdrawn from some areas. Sharon said there will be fewer killings of Hamas leaders.

An administration official said sending peacekeepers to the Middle East is not under consideration, but the idea is gaining support:

* France's foreign minister said he will discuss the idea with foreign ministers from the 15-nation European Union (news - web sites) today.

* Sen. Richard Lugar (news, bio, voting record), R-Ind., head of the Foreign Relations Committee, said U.S. troops might be part of a force.

* Sen. John Warner (news, bio, voting record), R-Va., suggested on CNN's Late Edition that Israeli and Palestinian officials invite NATO (news - web sites) troops to the region.

''I think the Palestinian Authority (news - web sites) would welcome the presence of any third party,'' Ziad Abu Amr, the Palestinian culture minister, told CNN. Ehud Olmert, Israel's vice prime minister, said that if the Palestinians do not ''seriously fight terror . . . no NATO forces will be able to save them.''

If Iraq has a constitution ratified by their citizens with elections on the horizon and this stays on pace the dems might be in trouble in 2004....

Good freaking luck ! Oh yeah and it's nice to know that we will be training and funding the Palestinian security force with our tax dollars because Israel won't release frozen Palestinian funds to the Palestinian Authority to do so on their own.

Hamas Says It Will Not Accept Mideast Cease-Fire Proposal

Mon Jun 16, 2:58 PM ET

JERUSALEM, June 16 ? Officials of the militant group Hamas ended two days of scheduled talks with an Egyptian delegation in the Gaza Strip today, and said they were not prepared to accept a Mideast cease-fire proposal, despite strong pressure on the group to suspend its attacks on Israelis.

Since when has the Hamas ever listened to anything a ruler or head of Palestine had to say?

There is no profit nor power in peace. So they will do everything in their power to destroy any possibility for peace.

The Hamas leaders have nothing to lose- they send children out to die for them- what do they care if there's peace or not?

I look for Abbas to be assasinated shortly. The Hamas will never give in to peace as they are brainwashed to one and only one end... the end of Israel. IMHO As long as there is an Arafat there will be no change.

A Hamas Divided?

?You would think Hamas would be dancing a victory jig, not talking truce,? says one U.S. State Department official, who requested anonymity. ?But they are under a lot of pressure, from the funding side because of the war on terror, on the political side from Arafat and the European Union and the Russians. They may be willing to cool off for now.?

Richard Murphy, assistant secretary of state for Middle Eastern affairs during the Reagan administration, says Hamas is ?showing signs of being somewhat divided, and that?s the best news I?ve seen in some time.?
Murphy, now a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, says securing a truce with Hamas is vital if Abbas, who is also known as Abu Mazen, is to survive.
?If they suspend attacks for a while at least, that gives Abu Mazen the time he needs to build some strength, and he will need that strength eventually for a confrontation with them over the bigger question.?

Something you forgot to add in your post.

"Representatives of Hamas and other militant groups meeting in Gaza said they had demanded international guarantees for a halt to Israeli military strikes on their leaders before they would agree to stop their own attacks."

So let's get a international guarantee that Israel will not attack their leaders and we can then move on. Oh I forgot we rarely if ever ask Israel to do anything let alone abide by the rules we set on the Palestinians.
