AB350M updating without owning an AM4 cpu.

Well, i bought this board already before buying a cpu. And after waiting for the memory i ordered a long time i decided i would be better of with buying a ryzen 2600 instead of a 1600. But the board had an old bios, so i would be sure that it would not boot with a new ryzen.

I emailed the company i bought the board from several months ago and they are willing to update it for like 18 dollars.
I have to pay for shipping of course but at least this way, i do not have to buy another board or a cheap AM4 cpu that will boot.
In the extreme case that a new similar board would be so much better, i might be tempted to buy a new board after all.

Depending how much shipping costs, it may be cheaper to just buy a cheap AM4 CPU. You can also try to get a bootkit from AMD.

I looked it up, is only going to be about 17 dollars total for shipping and receiving it back.
In all honesty, it is here in the Netherlands, and the total cost is half of an A6-9500E which is around 59 dollars (47,90 euro). My current system is an A10 -6700 (socket FM2). Which is more powerful and in good working condition. I have no need for an A6-9500E.

I checked for a boot kit.
A boot kit from AMD is currently only available when you have a RYZEN+VEGA APU.
This service might be extended to people who own a ryzen 2x00 cpu only series.

https://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/2Gen-Ryzen-AM4-System-Bootup.aspx

Once you have submitted your claim for a processor loan boot kit, AMD will require a picture of your Ryzen with Radeon Vega graphics processor, that clearly shows the model number and unique serial number as well as a copy of the purchase invoice to authorize the request. Additionally, a summary or copy of communication with the motherboard manufacturer is requested to indicate why support from the Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) is not suitable.

I have the same board, and I am thinking of upgrading to a 2700(x). As long as there is good airflow over VRMs, would this be ok? What about a moderate OC?

I will be buying a 2600 that as a 65W TDP.
I remember the 1600 consumed around 70 watts in boost mode.
I expect the 2600 to be similar.
Personally, i would not use this board for overclocking but only for normal use.
It does not have a beefed up power supply.

Imo its less risk and work to use the a6 9500.
Then eg sell it second hand or kep it as reserve. Eg for selling the 2600 a month before zen 2 arives ;) might easily give you it for free.

I looked into that.
As far as i know the boot kit is only for ryzen based apus.
And if i could, i have to return the boot kit within 10 business days.
Closest AMD center is in Germany or Belgium.
I am located in the Netherlands.
I am not sure if i have to pay for sending the kit back.
I would have to pay so much that it would be cheaper to just buy such an apu or send it back.

I was told at work by an intern that Intel had a similar issue and what the intern knew that one of his classmates bought a cheap cpu and sold it for the costprice minus 1 euro to the next person who needed a cpu. That person also sold it afterwards for 1 euro less. And so on and on. In the end, all of the youngsters had their bios updated and it only costed them 1 euro.
I am not familiar with all details but it is nice to see such an collaboration.
It even has a topic called " sharing is caring ,skylake " on a dutch computer site called www.tweakers.nl.
