Meh I'm starting to realize most of Toyota and stuff are out of my budget for $15K after taxes and fees.

I'm eyeing 2011 Sorento with 30K miles for $13,999 + fees. Not bad.

[edit]
2011 Sonata GLS is even $11K~ with 45K miles, not bad.

Older Kias are pieces of crap. By 2011 though, they may have gotten better. I remember looking at a van in 2008 or so and it was like Playmobile compared to other manufacturers.

If you get Hyundai/Kia make sure you can get a CPO. Otherwise you lose out on the remainder of the 10yr/100k mile power train and all you get is a 5yr. So if you got a 2011 that wasn't CPOed, you'd only have 2yrs left on the warranty.

If you want to check Subaru, you probably want only to look at CVT since the 4 speed auto or 5 speed manual don't do to well with fuel economy. I've got an 08 forester with the 4 speed auto, and I average around 24mpg mixed city/highway, and get around 25-26mpg on the interstate/road trips. 08 forester doesn't have much legroom in the back, newer years do have significantly more legroom.
.

CVT ones prob are too new for his budget and are not that much better on the MPGH

Prius really works for his situation assuming not a lot of insane winter driving.

For forester I agree.
But outback and legacy both have had CVT for a number of years ...

and the 3-4mpg makes a pretty big difference over the life of the car.

But, I agree, Subaru is not the most practical, not the best choice for the OP. Prius wagon has a decent amount of room, and much better MPG. Or, Camry Hybrid is a nice car with great MPG.....
