NEW YORK In an unusual move for the organization, the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies (AAN) will release what it promises will be a bombshell article related to the Iraq conflict at 10 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on Tuesday. It will be made available free of charge for publication on all AAN-member Web sites, as well as for print, and more than 60 members papers have expressed interest in using it, according to Executive Director Richard Karpel.

The 3,000-word story, embargoed until Tuesday but obtained by E&P today, is based on a "closely held" memo purportedly written by a U.S. government official detailed to the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA). It was provided to writer Jason Vest by "a Western intelligence official." The memo offers a candid assessment of Iraq's bleak future -- as a country trapped in corruption and dysfunction -- and portrays a CPA cut off from the Iraqi people after a "year's worth of serious errors."

The article is titled, "Fables of Reconstruction," with a subhed, "A Coalition memo reveals that even true believers see the seeds of civil war in the occupation of Iraq."

Karpel commented, "We have no question that the memo is authentic."

Vest is an experienced investigative reporter who is currently senior correspondent for The American Prospect. He has worked on staff at U.S. News and & World Report and The Washington Post, written for The Atlantic Monthly, and was named as an "Unsung Hero of Washington Journalism" by American Journalism Review in 2002.

Ya' now conjur, this just adds to the huge pile of documentation that shows the Bush administration was and is incompetent. I'm just worried that after decades of declining education, Americans are just too non-involved/ignorant to realize what's going on and vote Bush out of office. I think a document could come out saying Bush attacked Iraq because Saddam tried to kill his father and nobody on the right would care.

Exactly.

I was very pro-Bush in 2000 and was even supporting him last year in this war on Iraq (I fell for the deception.)

But, after reading and learning more about the administration, I see we were sold a bill of goods and the White House has enshrouded itself in a veil of secrecy while putting people like Paul O'Neill and Colin Powell out to the public to try and put a nice, shiny, moderate view on things.

Deception to the highest degree!

Please excuse me while I interupt the circle-jerk; so Americans are now stupid/ignorant when they arrive at different conclusions that you reached?

No. Many Americans are ignorant because despite numerous inside people coming out and saying the President is incompetent and heading us in the wrong direction, they continue to support him.

Notice Galt didn't even really address the topic.

Anyway, what a GIGANTIC FVCKUP OF IMMENSE PROPORTIONS this war has been.

200 billion down the drain, the lives of thousands of soldiers shattered, tens of thousands of dead Iraqi's, and we are taking resources out of our war against Al Qaeda to fight this crap.

Before HS, CkG, or any other socalled "conservative", I'd sum up their entire argument for them.

an ignorant person's response:

Oh but we got Saddam! He was all what really mattered. He was the real WMD! Anyway it's the liberal media making Iraq worse than what it is!

Frankly, I think it's dead-on accurate to describe the vast majority of Americans as disengaged from politics. That doesn't necessarily make them "stupid," however it does potentially make them "ignorant" of all of the facts. Which only follows given they're too busy with other stuff to pay attention to what's going on in this country and around the world.

One would think 9/11 would be a wake-up call to our citizens that we need to make sure we know what our government is doing on our behalf. One would think it would force Americans to be more engaged given that the stakes are so high. Frankly, I don't think it happened.

Therefore, it's not inaccurate to characterize most Americans as ignorant of the facts in any given situation, and merely glossing over the details to arrive at a perception that the president is acting "tough" and therefore the situation is under control.

Interesting piece From your link, and setting a very common pattern;

Jason Vest is a senior correspondent for the American Prospect. His book on the current Bush administration and national security will be published in 2005.
