Aaah, the smell of burning electronic components. **Yes, there's a pic**

Been awhile since I've smelled that. Someone had a monitor out for the trash - I decided to try and give it a new home. Cleaned it up (A CTX 17" monitor), let it dry awhile, plugged it in (power only) and turned it on. Green light. High frequency sounds, varying slightly. Looked inside the back. Small light show. Bad thing. I guess I get no free monitor. It might be nice if I had a lot of space and a big extension cord to just let it burn and enjoy the show.
What to do with it now I wonder...ideas? Are there any places that take this stuff for recycling? Anyone want the 15-pin cable if I slice it off?🙂

Pic; the circled area is where I see the small spark.

The most fulfilling experience I ever had with a monitor was when I took a nice wooden bat to one. My hands felt weird for days afterward after smashing through that glass. Man-oh-man was that a stress reliever 😀

😛

That's why I tested it first. I already have monitors too. But free is free. I won't deny that I'm a cheapskate though.

I blew an electrolytic capacitor in my scanner a couple weeks ago after mistakenly plugging in the printer's AC adapter. They use the same jack size and I forgot to label them before moving the computer to a different room.

Went to Radio Shack and they had a compatible replacement for 98 cents. Little soldering, good as new!

dont be stupid enough to open it unless you know what you are doing, monitors hold a charge for a really long time(wanna say 3 years but could be 3 months). You need to have the equipment to discharge it otherwise the smell will be your burning flesh...

Ok, in my effort to prove myself an idiot, or just qualify for the Darwin Award, I set the thing outside, and hooked it to a surge strip with an on/off switch. I turned it on to see if I could figure out where the sparks were. They are about where it's circled:

The monitor is face down; the top of it is facing the camera. The picture's kind of lousy, yes - that's a picture on a DC3200, through one eyepiece on a set of binoculars. I didn't want to get too close to it; there's also a door between the monitor and me.

I know that there's one very important thing - don't touch anything that's normally inside of the plastic shell, or get close to it. And I don't intend to.

Based on the approxiamate location of where I see the spark (small, blue/white, continues as long as there's power), what might it be? No, I'm not going to attempt repairs either. I've already got plans for the plastic shell, assuming I figure a way of removing the CRT itself with any degree of safety.

We had to do some fault testing on a 6000W amp last week. To sum things up, the things that blew were:

The 4 of the 10 12000uF 100V caps vented.
6 power wires melted its insulation and welded together.
All the transistors let out its smoke.
a smaller cap split wide open and now looks like two flags on two flagpoles.

and finally, the whole PCB is charchoaled.

Get a new camera and update the original post with the pic so we don't have to scroll down 😉

Fiiiiiine, just for you.

Now, get the new camera 🙂

Only if you pay for it.

Well, the CRT assembly is in a box, and awaiting...either the trash, or possibly some recycling place, if anyone knows of one. I also sliced the 15-pin cable off, if anyone wants it.
