I've got a 32" Sony TV sitting right next to me. But there is no cable in this room!!! So is Satellite TV my only way to get some TV program now? No...I don't want to buy antenna and receive only fussy local channels. Is there any more option than just cable and satellite TV?
I live in LA area....and I received an offer by mail from Direct TV...FREE complete satellite TV system and FREE professional installation, and pay $31.99 a month for at least 12 months. Is there any hidden fee in it? Can anyone speak from experience?

There are four options for TV:

1. Fuzzy, "rabbit ears". Good at not picking up much of anything local.
2. Cable TV. Not too bad in LA and a decent price/picture
3. Satellite TV from DTV or Dish Network. Great picture quality, about same selection of channels as cable.
4. Using your TV for something other than TV (games, DVDs, etc).
...your only choices in LA.

That DirecTV deal isn't bad -- you just need to sign up for the year. Cancel earlier and you'll be paying a fee to cancel (they tell you that over the phone). Look around for some non-one year deals, but they are tough now -- DTV is making people sign up for a year to get the deal.

they have no hidden fees.. just that you have to commit for a set amount of time (like a year)

you should be able to get better deal than that!

dishnetwork is better...supposely the resolution is better than dtv, and they have the 9.99 deal going around.

oh, make sure you have a clear view of the sky where you're pointing the dish... (sw in the east coast, se in the west coast for dish)

The Dish Network deal advertised here (Cincinnati) is for $9.99 per month, but you have to purchase the dish itself for $199.

I'm currently signed up with Dish Network. Free installation, free satellite, and $31.99 a month for 100 channels (plus about 20 music channels). My other option here was Time Warner cable, which really sucks here. In my area, it's about $36 for about 65 channels. Time-Warner Digital cable is about $46 per month for what appeared to be 120 or so channels. Ugh.

I believe the owner of the house (I only rent one room) has cable. But how do I go about this? Ask her nicely and split her cable line and enoy it while she is paying all that?

Actually....cable companies usually have a charge for a second connection even though most people never sign up for it since Coax is so easy to split. I would ask them if there's any way you can either pay them for part of the fee and get a feed or try to work something out. At least that way, if your living conditions change, you won't be stuck in a contract. Plus, it'll save you in the long run as well... I mean, your landlord peeps prolly wouldn't mind doing a little work to reduce their cable cost. If you wonder about wiring, coax should be able to run outside as well with minimal sheilding as long as you won't be living there longer than 3-5 years. It's pretty tough stuff.

Ohh yeah, option 3. Call the Cable company and start service. They'll install it and everything if you tell em where. But this goes back to your landlady person. She might have issues with the cable company running cable everywhere....talk to her and explain your woes.
