I figured it would get mistreated by an 8/9 year old, but I got my son a DS for his birthday a year or two ago. I was going to get the extended warranty on it from Target, but unfortunately they were actually out of the warranty cards when we bought it, and told us we could check back later (within 30 days?) and add it. Unfortunately, life got in the way and whatnot.

So what happens, I find out Nintendo fixes DSes on the hinge issue. Bonus! Except when I go to find out the status, I notice my destructive pain in the ass son had taken the serial number sticker off the DS! I still have the box with the serial, but I seriously doubt Nintendo will take a DS in with no serial on it. Damn kid!

They'll most likely charge you a repair fee, if they even accept it, probably like $75. You could just get another one on Ebay using cashback, I got mine (used) for about $67.

Both my daughter and wife's DS hinge broke. I ordered replacement shells from dealextreme today. I didn't know Nintendo repaired it for free. It's definitely a design flaw.

I don't know if you are serious or not but it's not okay to feel that way about your son unless you posted this in the midst of your anger in which case it's understandable.

Anyways, you can cough up the repair fee or get in on one of the Cyber Monday DS deals.

I am NOT buying him another DS. It got its money's worth for sure, but when you explicitly state that it is something that you need to be careful with, that's it. If he wants another one, he has to earn the money himself. (To top it off he's a royal pain in the ass anyway)

Only the earlier models as they had some sort of inherent design defect.

You could be as careful as you want, that hinge can still break.

And do you really think a 9-year old is going to understand the significance of a product serial number in a warranty claim?

Sure, if you explain it to him. As in "son, if that breaks, we'll need the product number there so that we can get Nintendo to fix it for free." Kids aren't dumb, especially when it relates to their toys.

As for SunnyD being pissed off, well, look, can you blame him? It's not like he's beating the kid physically or something. You broke it, you don't get it anymore. Not all families can afford to buy a new DS at the drop of a hat.

Oh dont get wrong, I totally get that, but I never would have even thought of explaining the significance of a serial number to a little kid unless there was a reason (like this one). Mainly because I havent the slightest idea why he would even touch it other than that he was completely and understandably oblivious to the significance of it.

I'm just saying...cut the kid some slack, its not like could have known any better.
