Happened to me once too. Fortunately, the numbver wasnt blocked. But, I didnt have Caller ID on my phone I was using. After like a hour borrowed the neighbors phone with Caller ID and called the bastards back. Made sure they knew I wasnt happy.

But it sure is funny when it happens to someone else. :D
How 'bout you be a pal and give me your home number so I can troubleshoot my PC-fax setup, eh? :D

Had this exact problem 3 yrs ago. Hooked up the modem and received a FAX from a shipyard in Greece. Nice. As soon as I received the fax they stopped trying.

Although, not wishing to be a doomsayer here, but yours sounds automated....and if it is, ur f***** unless MCI save ur bacon.
Yeah, I'm gonna talk to them and maybe the cops (or whoever the appropriate authorities are) if I can't get this figured out on my own.

Ornery: That's just way to much money and trouble. Worst comes to worst, I'll just pony up the $15 to change my phone number. I just really don't want to do that since it will entail calling zillions of friends/relatives to let them know about the change.

I'd only do that myself, because I'm somewhat in the market for one. I've been putting it off, because I figured everyone would eventually switch over to email, but I guess there's still a need for FAX machines.

I have exactly zero need for one at home. I'm pretty confident I can get the fax/modem thing to work tho since Bunker used to troubleshoot them for a living. That he lives near me and will work for beer helps too. :D

I strongly suggest you get your fax software working and receive the fax. I would also keep a log of each call this fax machine has made to your number.

It it turns out to be a spam fax, there are a number of things you can do. First, US federal law prohibits junk faxes. You can sue the sender in small claims court for damages (up to $1500 per fax). You can also get your state Attorney General, their state Attorney General and the FCC involved as well.

Take a look at Junkbusters' junk fax page or junkfax.org for more information on how to proceed if this is a junk fax.

Unsolicited commercial faxes can come at a price in some states... I believe spam falls under a similar category.

Georgia (my home state) has such laws on the books. As a bonus, I have some connections to the GA attorney general's office I could utilitize in this matter. :D

Yeah, Ornery mentioned that too. I may resort to that if I can't get the fax/modem working. Nerd that I am, I refuse to believe that I won't eventually figure it out. :p

This has been happening on and off forever. It'll stop for a while and then start back up. Usually it's just a couple calls, but this has literally been one call every 5 min on the nose. I'm about to lose it.

Viper: I don't have a fax machine, nor do I have access to one. Other suggestions?
He meant for you to install a modem in your computer & get fax software, then receive the fax. The cover sheet should have the info of the person or company sending the fax. Then it's up to you what to do with this information. ;)

fax back...3 black sheets taped together in a loop.
I can't wait to go home today! :D

Try putting that 3 tone sound at the beginning of your answer message--it might think it reached a disconnected number and never call again.
As a bonus, you won't get any more automated computer calls.
Can't think where I found it but do a google search and you can d/l the tune.

How about if you treat it as a harassing phone call with your phone company?
There are people who do this stuff on purpose simply as a means to harass; started back when modems were the only to access the net. Besides, a legitimate (non-spam) fax line should not have its number blocked.

I'm gonna go that route if I fail at getting anywhere with this on my own. It'd be so much more fun to figure out who they are and sue the crap out of them under the TCPA. :D

Are the calls still coming as much?

Or did they stop once you hooked the stuff up? That sure would be fitting..

They've stopped as of yesterday (when I got the software working), but that's kinda been the pattern in the past year or so. I'll get two or three of these calls each day for a few days and then they'll stop for a while. I've got my spare (and very quiet) rig running the software, so I'll just let it do it's thing until they call again and then hopefully nail them to the wall. It's also my MP3 server, so I leave it running all the time anyway.

Did that a while ago. Really cut down the auto-dial calls, but this particular fax machine seems unimpressed.

how does it work? do i play it over the speakers and have my answering machine record the sound, then record my msg?
