I was annoyed by the jaggies in Counter-Strike: Source 1024x768, so I put on AAx2. It worked well, so I turned on x4. The highest choice available for me (at least in the in-game menu, with my ASUS N6600GT) is x6, but when I try to do that the antialiasing disappears. It says I'm on x6 but I can clearly tell that it's off.

What's the problem here?

correct. But 8x isn't available so you would need to force this via drivers.

Well 4x makes it much less noticable. If I stand still and look, it still shows clearly of course, but all in all, it's much smoother.

I wonder though, why different engines have different amounts of aliasing even at the same resolution?

And, does "force it through the driver" mean setting 8xS in the nVidia options, instead of application controlled?

It's not the engine so much but the game environment. In low contrast environments like Splinter Cell and Doom3 jagged edges are much less noticeable. And yes, you have to set 8xS in the driver options and override the app setting.

I just noticed that with half-life today. I just used the drivers to force it up to 8x, and it looks great (at 15fps).

Haha, well, in that case you haven't much choice. But just a bit of AA will at least make it less noticable during active play.
