A8N-SLI: Using the 2nd PCI-E slot only?

I've got reason to believe that my 1st PCI-E slot is messed up, so I'd like to try a video card in the 2nd slot (the bottom one) if possible. If I try to put it in that slot and then supply power to the motherboard (but not power up), a red light comes up, which I'm told means that you need to hook up the 4-pin power adapter to the EZ-plug, but it still kind of freaks me out, being red and all.

Has anyone tried this?

You need to put the selector in dual mode, plug that 4-pin molex into the board, and the card placed in the second pci-e port will run 8x just fine.

Even if the 1st port is empty? Just want to make sure - I'm a pessimist
