after i install a fresh copy of windows xp pro and then the NVidia NForce drivers from the cd and reboot, i just get a blank screen during windows bootup. even when i try to get into safe mode, it freezes after loading the last driver which is Mup.sys. what can I do to trouble shoot?

I'm having a similar problem with yours. I have 2 WD Raptors, and I have installed Windows XP successfully and been using for a week also. This morning, I found my system freezed and tried to reboot, then I got the BSOD.

So I went in the BIOS to see what's wrong, and my 2nd HD was missing. (C: is still there) When I tried to boot the OS, the system froze on Windows logo screen. It's the second time that this has happened to me, and at first I replaced the HD.

I tried to Safe boot, and it freezes after Mup.sys! I've been puzzled all day. (couldn't check it thoroughly since I'm at work right now)

Are you using SATA? I'm thinking it's one of the followings:

1. Faulty Hard Disk
2. Faulty SATA Cable (or loose SATA/Power cable)
3. Faulty SATA Ports on ASUS motherboard

Could anyone help us out? I've been very happy with this AMD system since I switched from Intel, except this problem.

Thanks alot

Hmm puzzling. I would run diagnostics on your hard drives if you have another computer to check and make sure the hard drive isn't the culprit. As for the OP try and do a sfc /scannow as mup.sys may have gotten corrupted. Also I would download the newest drivers which are available at www.nvidia.com. Just install the ethernet adapter driver from the cd then use your internet and get the most up to date drivers.

I encountered similar problem w/ A8N Sli Deluxe (missing second sata hdd), and I also encountered identical problem w/ A8N Sli Premium. I ran WD diagnostic program and found no problem. So I changed my psu from Antec TruePower 430 to Seasonic S12 500w, and the problem hasn't occured. I hope this helps. Keep in mind, I still don't know what caused the problem. My specs:

A8N SLI Premium
3200+ Winchester
Corsair TwinX1024C2 (TCCD at 200mhz 2-2-2-7 1t or 250mhz 2.5-3-3-7 1t)
WD 36gig Raptor
WD 1600JD (sata)
MSI 6600GT * 2
Audigy 2
Pioneer DVR108 (in its independent IDE channel)
Samsung DVD Rom (alsl in its independent IDE channel)

it can't be a hard drive problem because i tried both a 40gb PATA hd and a 160gb SATA hd and the problem still arises w/ either installed.

I'm also using the Antec TruePower 430Watt right now w/ a 20-pin to 24-pin ATX adapter so maybe that might be the problem. I'll try and pick up another PSU from Fry's to see if it'll fix the problem, thanks.

Don't be too sure yet. I just got home and guess what, the missing hard disk magically came back. (I didn't do a thing) So yes, it's definitely not the HD, but the board (or PSU). But I'm more inclined to think it's the board. This isn't a good sign, however. Do we have to be concerned all the time for a chance to lose a hard disk??

Also, check your Event Viewer. (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer) I found quite a few disk errors/warnings there. Not sure how to resolve this problem yet.

Sounds like this board needs quite a bit of power.
Weak power supply ==> Possibly screwy SATA ports (not enough to power them?) ==> Problems while reading data.

Yes Lopri, when I encountered the "missing sata" problem, it appeared and dissapeared numerous times. That was with my 20pin Antec TruePower 430, and now with my Seasonic S12, I have been running rock solid for about a month. It looks like you have a excellent psu, but it's weird you are still seeing this problem.

I have a similar problem with an A8N-SLI Premium.
I have 4 SATA HD's connected under the Nvidia Controller and 2 more under the Silicon controller + 1 SATA CD Rom.

I am using a 20 Pin PS, a thermaltake 560W PurePower and I have had some drives dissapear at times.

However, the biggest problem I have is that I cannot get the 2 HD's under the silicon controller to be detected by windows or in the bios. The weird thing is that the SATA CD drive under the same controller is detected by windows XP Pro.

I am not running any type of raid functions and have not made any changes to the bios.

Can anybody please help?

TIA!

Question for you guys:

Do you guys use the board's EZ-Plug? The mannual says it's necessary when using 2 vid cards, and since I only have one, I didn't bother plugging in it. Just curious.

You guys try stripping your system down to one hard drive, one video card, one optical drive to see if power is the actual problem?

This would be helpful for me, because I am building a system with an Asus A8N-SLi Premium and Antec Truepower2 430W.

Hmm.. i'm getting a bunch of these warnings:

Type: Warning Event: 51

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation.

People who have changed the PSU and fixed the problem.. Have your systems been running stable? I'm just about to request RMA on my PSU.

Please let me know. I'd much appreciate it.

Uh-Oh. The problem has re-surfuced. I simply uninstalled Norton Internet Security 2005, and after a reboot my second hdd was gone. Now evertime I turn on my computer the checkdisk screen shows up.

PS. If you are having this problem, are you using Creative Sound Cards? Do you use Daemon tools?

I have Creative Audizy 2 ZS. No Daemon tools (I don't think this one matters)
I plugged the EZ Plug and haven't had the problem so far. (Only for a day) But I'm not crossing my fingers yet. Still waiting for my new PSU.

I'm having these problems too. My drive is a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250GB and my PS is a 600W Enermax. The Windows XP Pro install goes fine, but shortly after installing the chipset drivers, the drive either disappears or becomes wonky and my windows installation is trashed for good. I'm on my 4th windows install in a day trying to figure this out.

Any suggestions?

By the way, my system has stopped destroying its windows installation once I stopped installing the Nvidia chipset IDE drivers (yes, the latest ones, as well as the ones that came with the mobo). Using the default microsoft drivers has kept the system stable for a few hours now. I also didn't install the Nvidia firewall this time either, so perhaps there's an interaction...

Notice the 2 Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250 in my signature. Nvidia IDE drivers sucks!!!

You have the answer.

My Maxtor is a SATA so I don't know if that makes a difference. Are any of you having issues with your SATA Maxtor Maxline III or Diamond Max 10 drive?

I get the same event 51 error as well. My D drive is a partition on my main drive. Which drive is your D drive?
