Hello dear gurus
my new asus a8n-sli premium is driving me nuts. i just finished assembling it three days ago - barebones only (CPU, video, memory)- and i got no video even though all the fans are working fine. i proceeded to clear the bios by moving the cmos clear jumper and then managed to get the post video. as expected CMOS checksum failed and i went into the bios to "save and exit". On doing so, the system hangs on reboot. no video and the zalman cnps-7700cu doesnt seem to be spinning as quickly as it should. Please keep in mind that i didnt change any setting in the bios, all stock settings. The only way i can get video again is by resetting the CMOS jumper. then i'm back to the "cmos checksum error" screen and round and round we go.
I've checked, double checked and triple checked all connections on the board, (tried three different types of ram thinking my ddr550 ram was having issues with the board), tried a different PSU, and tried a different video card, even changed bios battery, tried 1006 and 1007.002 bios.)
The only way im able to get this system past the boot screen is by changing "hypertransport" from auto to 5x. If if do this i am atleast able to get post video. The system also boots normally if I manually set the overclock options: FSB to 200MHZ, multiplier to 13, voltages all normal (i'm not overclocking) and htt to 5x. as you are all aware, by doing so, all the options under "Dram COnfiguration" are grayed out. SO, on rebooting, i see that my ram is recognized as 400Mhz(it should be 550, i suppose) and am able to finally get to to installing windows. Timings are on auto at 2.5-4-4-8 which the ram is guaranteed to do.
At this point, a funny thing happens. The system hangs at the exact same point EVERYTIME - and this is when im quick formatting a new partition using NTFS - exactly at the 20% mark. I tried installing ubuntu linux as well, but the same thing happens there. it fails at the same point during install. Ive tried pairs of hdds in raid 0, jbod configs- etc etc etc.
I even tried to change settings in the dram configuraiton screen (now the overclock options are all grayed out
) and tried to set the ram to 550mhz, 500mhz 466mhz etc. by doing this, i find that on my next reboot, the cpu is horribly overclocked (think i saw 3575Mhz when the FX-55 should normally be at 2600).
Someone please help. I have spent the last three days doing not much else but reading threads and resetting the cmos. I'm a mess. I hate ASUS. My girlfirend is going to leave me. HELP!!
