To bap4201; I didn't really "crush" the pins, I squeezed them together just so I could push them through the board. When they were through, they went back to their original form, so I was able to reuse them.

Zalman makes a shorter heatsink as well... the NB32J. It's gold but if you look hard enough for the NB32J-S it's silver 😉

I use the NB32J-S on my NF7-S and it works just fine. Keeps the NF7-S' chip at 30C even with a mobile 2400 oc'd to 2.4ghz.

If you're still insistent on some form of active cooling...

Zalman also makes brackets that mount to the PCI slot covers. They were originally intended for the first flower HSF's that didn't have a way to mount a fan on. They reach out over the CPU area, however if you mount the arm on your case's bottom 2 PCI slot covers it should be about right between the video cards. This way you can screw a 80mm-120mm fan of your choice on the arm to cool your GPU/NB area.

That's the one I bought as well. Good to know it fits. It doesn't look like a 6800 would create interference either.

I think you'd definitely want a good fan in the front of the case blowing on it though.
 
hmm. I got a Lian-li PC-50 case and 3 fans... I havea vantec stealth 80mm sucking air in, and only enermax psu suck airs out from the powersupply. The 3rd fan I will have is a big zalman 7700 blowing out from cpu and directly into the power supply.

Do you think the passive zalman on the chipset in this setting will work?
 
Okay, I've got everything up and running and yes, the chipset fan is a high-pitched screaming son-of-a-bitch (8000 RPM). It's 20x louder than any other fan in my case, except for the video card, which is soon to be replaced by an NV5 silencer.

If you have a good strong fan blowing in at the front, 120mm is preferable, then you'll be fine with the passive heatsink. If you're not planning on overclocking too much, you can probably get away with very low airflow across the fins.
 
The Zalman NB47 fits nice ? it took me a few extra minutes to get it just right as you have to align the brackets.

Temps went from 32-33 with the 8K screamer OEM fan to 40 with the Zalman. I placed a slow speed case fan to blow across the Zalman bringing the temp down to 29-30. I can see why it is actively cooled ? that chip can get hot.

Close fit with a second video cards but the Zalman looks like it was made for this board.

how are you monitoring temps for the chipset? what program are u using?
 
I am picking up one of the ZALMAN NorthBridge Chipset Cooler, Model "ZM-NB47J" -RETAIL for $5.49 at New Egg.

I hope this thread stays alive I would like to know how this works out. I will post my experiences once I get it up and running.

 

This is a bit off topic of North Bridge Chip cooling, but does anyone have a good quiet solution for two NVidia 6600GT video cards in the SLI mode?

I was considering two Zalman ZM17-CU VGA coolers:

I am wondering if these will work with my two ASUS 6600GT's. I plan on doing some kind of fan blowing on all three components, the two VGA cards and the NorthBridge chip.

 
dunno but i wondered too if i can put some passive zalman vga cooler on my msi 6600 gt. i wanted to buy asus card too but i heard they get really loud, and i can barely hear my msi, but i only use 1 ...
 
Well I just got my A8N up and running and the northbridge fan is the loudest thing in my case. Oh, and it's not even a steady loud "whir" or "whine" but more of a "rattle". If I put my finger on it and stop it I can hear my 120mm fans and the BFG's cooler but they're dwarfed by this annoying POS design cooling solution from Asus.

I've got a Sonata with a 120mm fan blowing right across this thing so maybe the passive cooler is a good option for me. Hope to hear some feedback to those who went with it.
 
I'm in the same boat, noise-wise. I've got 3 120mm fans, 2 for the case and one for the cpu, plus the 6600GT fan. This loud, annoying, rattling fan is driving me nuts. I'd love to slow it down to about 6K RPMs. Rather than that, I ordered the blue Zalman cooler from svcompucycle for about $6.00 (shipping extra). That fan has got to go, and soon.

Has anyone tried a slot-fan between their SLI pair in combination with a passive cooler like the Zalman? I'd be interested in the overall affect on video card, NForce4, and ambient temps. I'm thinking this may be a quiet way to evacuate heat from the SLI pair and NForce4 chipset more directly.

I just upgraded to my current config from an ancient system, and I'm getting the exact same issue with the chipset fan. It's not so much the heat for me as it is the noise. When I first turned it on I thought I had a power cable caught in one of the 120mm case fans. I'm replacing it with an NB-47, just ordered it from ZZF, wish me luck.
 
I just put on the nb47j. It gets only warm to the touch, and I am not running SLI. So, I think any big passive heatsink would work for the board.
I have a closed case, and 1 intake, 1 outtake fan, and 1 psu fan. What kind of temps do you kinds get with the chipset before and after (cpu, and mobo)?
I didn't take the before temp so nothign to report here.

I'm looking to replace the chipset fan with the blue Zalman one but am worried my Leadtek 6800GT will get in the way.

I know people have managed to fit the blue Zalman heatsink around 6800GTs but the Leadtek 6800GT does have a rather large copper heatsink and dual slot fan "thing" stuck to it.

Has anyone got a *Leadtek* 6800 GT and the zalman heatsink installed? Thanks.

I don't have the Leadtek 6800, but I'll have an eVGA 6800 on Wednesday. I'd like to do a before/after comparison if someone knows of any software I can use to monitor the NF4 SLI temperature.

I'm planning on using the Arctic Cooling NF Silencer 5 to cool the 6800. Based on the reviews I've read, this should be much quieter than the standard heatsink/fan combination on the 6800 board.

I'm also thinking that since the exhaust of the Silencer will be almost directly above the NF4 SLI with Zalman heatsink, that I could mod the Silencer to allow me to "suck" air from the heatsink, further improving the cooling.

Again, if I could find some software to monitor the NF4 SLI, I'd be able to tell if this theory is based on fact. Or, if it is just a lousy theory.

Here is a link to the Silencer 5 page. You can see the bottom left of it may allow a tubing connection to accomplish this. I think this could be done with minimal impact on the Silencer's efficiency while providing an efficient method to cool the NF4 chipset.
