a8n-sli chipset heatsink fan

Finally got my Papst 412/2 (3pin).

At full speed (6000rpm) it isn't as silent as I expected, but if I lower to around 4500rpm it's becoming difficult to hear it (I bought a Zalman Fan Mate 2).

My ears can finally rest... 😀

Pretty much. I ended up unplugging the fan and I noticed no real differences in temperature.

The thing I am not 100% sure of is what Speedfan is reporting as Temp3. Temp 1 and Temp 2 correspond Asus Probe CPU and MB temperatures respectively. If temp 3 is indeed the NB temp then unplugging the fan makes no difference at all. I assume that Temp 3 is NB temp since Fan3 is the chipset fan.

However this cannot be right as it has to make a difference with a fan blowing on the HS. The other thing is that just by feel, the fan makes a difference.

Right now I'm just assuming that my rig is fine without the fan on the NB sink as it works fine and the noise of the Sunon is quite irritating. What I might do is direct a 80mm fan on the chipset or get faster intake and exhaust fans that run a lot of air through the system. That solves the global cooling issues of the system and makes everything run cooler.
 
there is NOT a temperature probe on the NF4 chipset, or at least one that the motherboard can access. My temperatures measured using my case temperature diodes are always more than 6 degrees higher than the ones reported by speedfan.
Use an external probe attached to the heatsink to measure the temperature...
 
What was your actual temp on the heatsink, killa?

I was shocked to see that my chipset was about 7 to 10 higher than asus probe, but that my cpu was about 5 below!
 
Now I somehow managed to install the Papst (I simply had to, because the stock fan started to show me almost 10 000 rpm)...

After some 10 minutes when I touch the stock heatsink it first feels warmish, but after 10 seconds of this it begins to feel hot - is this normal? Since the MB temperature in Asus Probe isn't the chipset temperature I can't find out the real chipset temp.

Can someone tell me how does the heatsink feel with the stock fan? Is it warm/hot too (I mean in idle after having used some 30 minutes)? I'm just a bit worried that's all...
 
Like I've said, without a fan on the heatsink directly, just with fans in the case pointed in the general direction of an asus heatsink without the fan... I am getting temps on the heatsink with a digital thermometerof 42 to 44 C.

That is about 108 F to 114 F... so yes, it should feel hot, and it will get to a peak of heat only when the system is being stressed.

When the system is not stressed, my reading was about 36 to 39 C, but only after start-up.

Once the chipset is stressed once, it doesn't quite go back down to its original level. It hovers aroun 40-42C.
 
Well, I finally got fed up with the crappy Asus fan, and I replaced it with this fan. I had to dremel the ends of the two mounts because they got in the way of the fan header and a motherboard component, but after that the fan went on smoothly, and it seems to be working fine. There is no fan speed wire with this fan, but it seems to work well. I gotta think that all-copper should help cool it well. I will take pics of my installation and post them shortly.

I can tell you that the Vantec Iceberq VGA cooler I installed on my northbridge fits just fine underneath my NV5 Silencer. See the link I posted in my previous reply in this thread.
 
Oh dear, I fear I may have been a bit hasty in my assessment of the impact of chopping up my NV5 to fit a Zalman NB32 underneath (see my post on previous page). It hasn't made any difference to my GPU temps at idle but I think it is now much less efficient at cooling under load (which is when you really need it I guess). Anyone else who tried this mod having similar problems?

On the upside my northbridge is positively chilly 😉

Think I'm going to order a Zalman VF700 to replace my NV5 - could this be the complete answer to our chipset fan woes? I'll keep you posted.
 
I had enough with Papst 412fm, it doesn't cool enough and I don't recommend it to anyone.

So I bought the Swiftech MCX 159-R, wasn't very cheap but who cares! Now I can be 100% sure that my chipset stays cool. 🙂 In idle Swiftech feels as warm as my hand, so 37 degrees I'd say (room temperature is 25c).

Fits nicely with my XFX gf6600gt pci-e with Zalman vf700-alcu.

For the first time in my life I had to take the motherboard out of the case but it wasn't that bad, I think almost anyone could do that. And oh, what comes to the noise: it's as quiet as Papst.
 
Nice. Exactly what I plan on doing. Looks like you had just about 1/8" of clearance between the chipset heat sink and the Zalman, but that's more than enough.
 
*Sigh* I wish that Swiftech would work with an NV5 Silencer. I already have $30 invested in it and don't want to buy a Zalman GPU fan for my 6800GT.

I remember seeing in another post that someone had an issue with high temperatures because the screws holding the NV5 were either too tight or too loose (don't remember which) and were causing the heatsink to have poor contact with the GPU. They adjusted the screws to optimze temp and OC performance. Could that be your problem?

Also what is the temp under load?
You should expect a higher temp than before because the air flowing across the GPU will be several degree hotter due to warm air entering the NV5 from the northbridge.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had expected a bit of an increase in load temps but I think the ones I'm getting now are too high.
For example, I'm getting 90+ degrees after running rthdribl for about 10 mins. Playing Rome Total War on max settings also sends the temps soaring. I know the card says it's good til 135 degrees but mine wimps out at about 90 odd I think.

I tightened up the screws on my NV5 until I got a bit nervous so I think they make good contact with the GPU and ram chips.
I'm going to try the Zalman cooler tomorrow and see if there's an improvement. I'm also going to reinstall XP to try and lock down a few niggles I've been having with my system. I'll post the temps for the Zalman when I'm back up and running.

Tightening the screws could be the opposite of what you may want to do. After thinking about it for awhile, I seem to remember the previous post had to back off on the screws to get good contact. The way the board is designed could cause some flexing away from the GPU if the screws are too tight. I'll take a look at my board after I get home to see if this is accurate.

Edit: Looked at my board, on the 6800GT card, the screws are in between the memory and the GPU, what the other post was seeing was with too tight screws, the board was bowing and pulling off the memory and/or GPU. There was a happy balance between too tight /too loose.

The key is to cut some pins off the Swiftech rather than modify the NV5 Silencer. The Swiftech will still give you most of its cooling and you don't mess up the airflow from the NV5, which is to designed to push all the hot air from the GPU out of your case not into the chipset. See this thread on the SPCR forums. The pins on the Swiftech are aluminium and are, I'm told, relatively easy to remove with a hack saw or wire cutters.
 
I spent this morning fitting my newly purchased VF700 Cu VGA cooler to my 6800GT - replacing the NV5 which I had chopped up to fit a Zalman heatsink under.

Installation was very easy though you have to fit it at a different angle to the suggested one if you are going to avoid hitting the chipset heatsink. You simply use the other two mounting holes so that's no problem and I can't see that makes the slightest bit of difference to how to cools.

So does it work? You bet it does. Temps with my NV5 were about 62 idle and creeping up to 90 after 10 mins of rthdribl. With the VF700 I get idle temps of about 44 and load temps (another 10 mins of rthdribl) of 60 - that's less than my idle temp previously! So I'm very happy with this cooler, however there is quite a big but...

While I was happily monitoring my GPU temps I just happened to glance at the temp monitor display on my P160 case (it comes with two sensors that you can place anywhere in the case - one of mine was in the prongs of the Zalman heatsink on my chipset). It said 63 degrees! I shut down very quickly but not before I'd suffered a bit of disk corruption. So the VF700 definitely does not produce enough airflow to keep the chipset happy.

Well I was going to reinstall in the next few days anyway (honestly, I said so in my last post!) so I wiped the hard drive with Killdisk and started from scratch again. Of course, I needed some chipset cooling so I've now got a 120mm Acoustifan blutacked to the back of the drive cage blasting the chipset heatsink with nice cool air (sensor now reports 46) as a temporary solution.

Back up and running now but seething about the amount of grief I've had to go through to deal with this little b*gger of a chipset fan. I'm now going to have to shell out for a Swiftech MCX159 to replace my Zalman NB32 - it seems getting a quiet and effective solution to cooling these nForce4 chipsets is an expensive business. No wonder Asus only spent about 10p on their chipset fan...
 
I just got my NB47J this morning and I've already installed it. It is kinda being cooled by my video card's fan. I do have a Sunon 3100RPM 120x25mm fan coming in the mail. Also as soon as I get my refund from ZZF I am going to get a XP-120 and two more Panaflo Ultra High Speed fans that blow at around 2750RPM.

Hehe.

I have ordered the same things ... MCX159, VF700-CU and a 6800GT. Tell me, suppose you are looking at the VF700 on the front of the graphics card with the slot connector pointing downwards and the video outputs to your left ... are you saying that the mounting bracket should be oriented in a line going from bottom-left to top-right? Hope that makes sense. I can see that that would effectively swivel the big fins, that would normally be towards the bottom right of the card, anti-clockwise and upwards - further away from chipset. If you were able to post a picture, that would be a great help!
