Well my PC stopped booting into windows 2 weeks ago, but with the holidays and all I just got around to looking at it.

When booting up, it wont detect the one IDE channel that my main hard drive & burner are on. It detects the one the DVD and second hard drive. It then gives a NTLDR error and craps out.

So I thought mebbe HDD died out, so I booted up into Knoppix and I can access all partitions on both HDDs. Thinking it was maybe a BIOS problem I upgraded the BIOS to the latest version last night and the same problem continues.

IDE controller dying or something else that I am not seeing.

If it is indeed the IDE controller dying, what's a good new mobo that supports a 2500+ or a new 64-bit combo?

Have you tried a different (known-good) IDE cable on the primary channel?
I have seen these go bad many times.

I guess I should try that.....probably will, hopefully that is the problem and nothing else!

Update:

Did that and it recognizes the hard drives in the BIOS now. except once it goes through the XP loading screen it kinda freezes.

Even in safe mode...mup.sys is the last thing it loads, after that pretty much frozen. Any suggestions??

If nothing else, I think I am just gonna reformat this weekend......assuming I find the safe place I put my XP key in!
