Hi all...

I'm considering getting an Asus A7V333 and some 512megs DDR333-Ram as well as an Athlon XP 2100+...

From the reviews I've read the board seems to be very good, but a friend of mine has had severe problems with it, it even fried to processors! DO you have any experiences with this board? Would you buy it? Or is the A7V8X the better choice?

Thanx....

I upgraded my machine with the Asus A7V333 and I can't praise it enough. It is so much better than the Abit KG7 I had. Everything runs smoother. I used to get graphical glithces in GTAIII, which I was blaming on the video drivers, but I found out it was the Abit board causing the glitches, because with the same hardware and software drivers and the new Asus board the glitches are gone. The only problem I had was, I had to disable USB 2.0 because it would cause the machine not to be able to shutdown in Win98SE. Asus says you have to use certain DDR333 memory modules with the board, or it will be unstable, I installed Corsair XMS 512meg module which is not on there list, and the system hasn't had a problem yet. I recommend the board. I don't overclock my system so i can't tell you how it would perform in overclocking.

My Setup:
Athlon 1900+
Asus A7V333
512meg PC2700 XMS Corsair memory
Thermaltake Volcano 9 CPU Fan
Geforce 4 Ti4400
SBLive! 5.1 Gamer
WD 40 gig HD
IBM 9 gig Ultrawide2 SCSI
DVD

I have an ASUS A7V333 with an Athlon 1600+ (nothing is overclocked).

Like SuperBee, I can't praise it enough. It's a damn damn good board. With anything, you're going to get negative reviews. There's a guy posting that had two Antec power supplies fail on him shortly after arrival, though my Antec is running perfect. Things happen and it's unavoidable.

The A7V8X is for DDR 400 (I think) but it doesn't offer much functionality over the DDR 333. Anandtech has a review on the board so check it out.

The only complaint I have with my new system is heat, but I'm not sure if it's an issue with the processor (alot of people are complaining about high heat with 1600) or something else or what.

Anyways.. heh..

To make a long post short..

I give the A7V333 two thumbs up.

I just bought the A7V333 after helping my boss build a new machine based on the board. It has some quirks and glitches, but seems to be a damn fine board. I have an Asus A7V (the original) and I love that board. Its simply gorgeous.

I have yet to boot up my 333, but as soon as my ram comes in, I'll let ya know if I have any probs with it.

I have one. I discourage the use of the Windows-based BIOS flash utility, by the way, having just nuked my BIOS with it. That's the second time I've had one of these conk out when using the Windows-based BIOS flash utility. :|

Other than that, the onboard USB 2.0 controller severely cripples my Ultra160 SCSI adapter's throughput and it has enough jumpers that you can't count them all without you AND a friend taking off your socks so you can count on both sets of toes. How's that for a vivid image... :D One of the jumpers to know about is the OVERVOLTAGE jumper, a possible explaination for the toasting of two CPUs in your friend's board. It adds 0.3V to whatever voltages you see in the BIOS or on the voltage jumpers... very dangerous!
