A7V266 Memory Issues

I have a Asus A7V266 and whatever memory I put in, it only reads half of that. I didn't mix and match or anything, I had one stick at a time. Is this a BIOS issues or a whole another problem altogether?
 
If this is memory you got recently, your experience is common.

Recent DIMMs generally use a different size memory chip and arrangement than older DIMMs did (often having half the number of RAM chiips), which older motherboards may not be able to set up to use the whole amount.
