Depends on where you have put the harddrive! is is on the promise controller or the internal via controller? If it is on the promise controller you won't see it in the bios...so try changing the cable to another channel.

This drive has 4 ide channels (all udma 100). I believe that the two ide channels towards the bottom of the board is the promise controller. So then if you put the cable to the blue connector (the top one) the bios should find the drive. Im do not think that this drive have an option for 16 headers or 15 headers. So I don't think it is the harddrive. and is the drive master? and no other ide drives connected to the same cable?

If you have plugged it into the blue mobo connector and it still does not work, try a different cable. Is it an ATA 100 hd?

If it's the only drive on the cable, is the jumper set to Single? That may be your problem.

Have you put a partition on it? Won't detect it, unless there's a partition on it.

here's what I would do.
put it on the regular IDE channel, make sure Windows is cool, etc. & you have the drivers for the promise installed.

when it asks you to restart, say no & shut down manually instead
move the cable to the ata100

when you boot again, enter the bios & do the following
[*]there should be a setting detect promise controller make sure it's auto, or enabled.
[*]move to the "1st" boot device, & change it to ata100 ( i think it says ata100, might say SCSI, can't remember right now - consider my nick ;))

i think that should do it, I can check when I get home.

Having similar problems with a Quantum 20G LM and an Asus 40X on the same IDE channel. When the CDROM is moved to the Secondary channel, all is well.

I'm going to try updating the BIOS.

Try This I just had a similar problem.. If that is your only hard drive WD have a funny way of being detected with a jumper. REMOVE the jumper and it should detect. The reason it detects with a partition is because it is acting like 2 drives

Do what joinT said, make sure you bios matches the settings below.

Boot Options
1. Other Boot Device: "Onboard ATA100 Boot"
2. Scsi/ATA100: "ATA100/SCSI"
3. Load Onboard ATA100 Bios: "Auto"

...Yea there seems to be a big performance difference.
