A7V133 and XP 1600+ BIOS question

Is anybody using the above combination and what BIOS revision are you running?
I just purchased my CPU and I was told I needed to Flash to the latest BIOS or I would fry the chip.
At the Asus website the latest BIOS is 1004, but I thought there was a 1005.
Any help appreciated.

actually, i believe most people are running bios 1007 to support xp's

you can get it here

Some ppl will have to do some extra after flashing the bios though, such as

1. Use jumper to set vcore instead of bios.
2. Use jumper to set the multiplier instead of bios.

Well I fitted the CPU and it wouldn't boot with a 133 FSB, only 100.
Had to use the jumpers to set it to run @10.5x133.
The main thing is, it runs at 1400, but maybe BIOS V1008 would fix the problem, but it's Beta and I'm a bit dubious about using it.

Anyone had any experience with this?

To run XP stable on this mobo, have to use jumper mode on
1. vcore (set to 1.75v
2. multiplier (11.5 for ur case)
3. FSB (133 for ur case)

Its not a bios probs. But its w/ the controller chip on the mobo.

1: Why do you say to run the multiplier at 11.5 for an unlocked XP 1600+?

2: When you say it's a problem with the controller chip, are you saying that the KT133a chipset won't allow me to adjust the clock speed with the BIOS? It will be a pain to overclock this chip if I have to use the jumpers, they give far less control.

It depends on the rev no. u have. An excerpt from a reply by Asus Germany : -

Basically, it says that revisions 1.05. (note trailing dot) and higher, can happily use the Athlon XP as long as they are using BIOS 1007.

For users of version 1.00 - 1.05 (no trailing dot), the following note applies:

'Set with these Main boards the multiplicator (FID) for this CPU manually by DIP SWITCH (JUMPERMODE), since otherwise (with older revisions) the system cannot necessary boot. (see also following "FID info. ") The Jumperless mode (by BIOS) should in this case not be used. This applies also if the CPU already possesses a fixed multiplier (hardwired).'

Again, you should be using BIOS 1007.

Sorry, U'll have to do tht. The A7V133 supports Athlon XP with PCB version 1.00 to 1.05 w/ 1007 BIOS only stable thru jumper mode. There is limitation in the vcore controller chip. I however, do not know if it apply to PCB ver 1.05.

Hi,

I just upgraded from a t-bird 1.4ghz to an athlon xp 1700+ on my A7V133a. Ever since then I've been getting memory dump errors (specifically saying win32k.sys). After formatting and re-instaling everything (and getting the latest updates to winxp including the K7 one) I still get those memory dump errors and now my hard drive just turns off, causing the system to reboot! I'm going to set the jumpers and see if that helps, but has anyone experienced these problems?

Yeah, it runs stable as far as I can tell at the moment, haven't had time to run Prime 95 or any serious testing though, and for the moment, as far as overclocking goes, I guess I'll just have to unlock the chip and play with the multiplier.

I have a KT7A in another machine that runs really well (none of the usual common probs) in another machine, maybe I can swap it into my main box with the XP, do you have any words of wisdom on that combination?
Maybe that would be a good option, and I would get to strip down and rebuild the two machines, sounds like fun!

Sound great. I have not tested on the Abit mobo yet...but I too suggest u go ahead & swap the mobo...like u said sounds fun. Any probs...post back here !

Just remember to flash to the latest bios from Abit b4 put ur XP in.

I've got a question for you guys.

I'm about to finally upgrade my PIII 733 mhz to an XP 1.40 GHZ with the Asus A7V133-C KT 133A Chipset. Will I have any problems with this, I want to make sure I'm getting a good working combo. Also will I be able to OC it? I'm new to overclocking and such, and this is my first build job, so I want to get some opinions/advice. Thanks

You can use your board with the XP as long as you update to BIOS number 1007, but the amount of overclocking functionality depends on the rev. number of your board.
Refer to Wind's info in the previous threads about this, but basically what it means is that if you have the earlier board, you won't be able to OC using the FSB, only the multiplier (if you unlock your chip) as you have to use the jumper settings on the board and not the BIOS, the problem being that the maximum FSB setting is 133, which is the default for the chip anyway.
If you have the later board, apparently you can use the BIOS which will give you, I think from memory about 150.

If you are buying these components new and seperately, I'd suggest going with a DDR mobo that is fully compatible with new XP chips, and higher performance, for a marginal amount more, and if you wanna hold on to that sdram you have, I still suggest you get a DDR mobo, that also supports sdram, so you can always just upgrade the memory later..

If u r buying the mobo new...go for the KT266A chipset mobo. Run better & support XP better & O/Cing as well.

Hmm...looks like u r stuck w/ the Asus mobo for now. Not sure bout Abit mobo. I'll see wht I can gather on tht Abit mobo. Will get back to u if I c anything. Until then...enjoy ur XP...sob...sob...I'm still w/ my Duron800@994.
