Are you touching the cpu or the fan or maybe your BIOS setting for temperature alarm control is too low. i.e. I set my alarm for around 110°F, computer runs about 100°F (P3-733) On warm humid days, it rings like yours.

Umm, don't even think of running without hs/fan. If you do, count down from 10 and kiss your cpu good-bye!

wait, wait, let me get this... you booted the computer with the Duron in without putting the heatsink on??? Oye... if that's the case, I guess you're the second one who's gotten cooked. remove the processor, power it on, if it still beeps and does nothing, your CPU is now in a better place.

I've heard of lots of things causing this, and my own Tbird system did it - the ceramic case around the processor had a hairline fracture (btw, golden orbs SUCK, be careful when you put them on, get an Alpha or Global Win FOP32:)

Basically from what i've read,
it comes down to:

A) you're processor is screwed (you did put a heatsink on it right?)
B) A short on the motherboard (is it touching your case somewhere other than the standoffs?)
C) your motherboard is broken (rare, but can happen)
D) Your CPU overheated.

Probably other symptoms too, but I think the above are the most common. From what I've gathered, I think that the (EVIL BRITISH POLICE CAR NOISE!) is a "Hardware Failure, motherboard or CPU"

Good Lord.... well sometimes we have to learn the hard way I guess.
It did make my day though. but then again just think. How many people have a Duron chip as a keychain eh...
