A7V Problem - Need Help Troubleshooting

I'm builing an Tbird on a Asus A7V mobo for a friend, but there's a problem.

While installing win2k at the default 800, I get the BSOD. Then on some restarts the computer won't POST, and made some strange low toned beeps.

I figure this usually happens on OC'ed chips clocked too high. So I underclocked the chip to 600mhz. Win2k installed fine and everything seemed normal.

Now I clocked the chip back to 800, and it locks during the win bootup, and doesn't wanna post on some boots. So I RMA'ed the chip. The tech guy just called me today saying the chip is working fine on a Abit KT7 and WinME. :(

??? Any ideas what the problem is? Here's my setup...
Tbird 800, A7V 1003bios, IBM30GB 75GXP, Infinion PC133 128MB RAM, Chrome Orb, Geforce MX

I just need ideas right now, cause I don't have a CPU to troubleshoot.

I think flashing is the first thing I'm gonna try...but would flashing help if the system runs fine underclocked at 600Mhz, and not at the default 800Mhz.

I had a VERY different problem. But I was told to try my CPU underclocked as well. If it worked I was told it was the CPU giving me hell. I would send it back.

:(

Could it really be the fan...shouldn't the cpu at least last a few minutes even with a POS heatsink/fan?

What version of the A7V do you have. It should be 1.02 if you got it recently. 1.01 has some issues but normally only with 900 plus BIRDS.
Orbs of any kind are not the greatest, but if you installed it correctly, not backwards, you should be able to see the 'socket 462' markings when its on the right way. One more thing, many CORBS have two layers of plastic film covering the thermal compound, failure to remove both will cause heat issues pretty quickly.

Crap...2 layers of plastic, dammit, I thought that blue layer was some sort of new heat transfer thingy, cause when I tried to take it off all the compound started coming off. I knew I should have just used the good ole radio shack compound. Wierd though...the plastic didn't melt. Anyways, the shop is sending me a replacement chip...so lesson learned. :|

Sounds like a heat problem. check to make sure the HS/fan is installed correctly. because i had the exact same problems when mines wasn't (win2000 would give me some kind of "stop error" (BSOD)), and get strange beeps, lockups, etc. i'm pretty sure its heat related

whoohoo...got the chip back in today, and took off all that crude on the CORB. Put on the good ole Radio Shack compound, and bammm running at 900 :) Thanks guys for all your help. I'll try and clock this sucker higher later, but I have midterms :(
