I just wanted to reinforce this. I've just been going in circles because of poor RAM on my A7V. I wouldn't recommend putting in generic RAM. I would also be careful of turning off your system in the middle of it's bootup.

I hope this helps anyone having a similar problem to mine.

hey Doopy, what kind of probs were you having?? Lockups? I have generic pc100 ram, and I've had lockup trouble. Did better ram fix your troubles?
 
generall yes. better ram has better quality. I think AMD systems (probably the chipset) has a higher requirement on RAM?
 
It is a given that all of AMD's EV6 efforts require better RAM. CAS2, yes, but also due to the doubling of the signal between the Northbridge and CPU the amount of information flowing between the Northbridge and memory is more so than other platforms.

Another place that this shows up is with noise on the RAM's signal. One "cheap" stick may work with it's level of noise, but two sticks of the same quality RAM doubles the noise and this noise is transfered over to the Northbridge causing a problem with the data the Northbridge is trying to manage coming from the CPU and can cause crashes.

As a tech, I get this call a lot where either one stick works fine, but two causes crashing. It's not bad RAM. It's just not RAM as good as it can be.

I think the next step for AMD should be to go back to a slot, integrate a Northbridge type of controller chip and 128MB of DDRSDRAM into the CPU and up the price $200. Maintain a second Northbridge on the motherboard to handle additional RAM and the AGP slot and we're good to go!

This isn't too far fetched since the 760 chipset allows scalability of SMP by allowing Northbridges to be "daisy chained" to allow 2, 4, 6 and 8 CPU configurations. 😉
 
That sounds to be a good move. I think the 200 bucks worth it.

I have seen a lot of my friends using generic or not-so-famous RAM on AMD systems and ended up exchanging the RAM or buy some new ones... I would prefer to spend the extra bucks for some better RAM
 
Yeah... too bad I said "should be" and not "would be".

The only thing that AMD has put in their roadmaps as far as CPU integration is the integration of the Northbridge in the CPU and they had been talking about that back in the days of the slot. Dunno how they'll pull that off with on-die technologies in the "near future".
 
well, I have this thought. Integration of the North Bridge I think they have probably done the design or at least the research end. But it would be too "soon" for them to push that out. Maybe it's a better stretegy for them to keep it as their "secret weapon", and just watch what Intel does. Assume that AMD is a ahead of Intel now, they just have to watch and make sure they are a bit ahead of Intel.

That way they can ensure their market, and at the same time put themselves above intel. I guess it's like a way to maximize their profit...

But no matter what, I'd love to see their processors having integrated North Bridge and RAM. That could shock the world.

Cool! You guys reinforced just what I was thinking. I'm definately going to upgrade the ram. Hmm...the mushkin stuff is looking pretty good right now. Right now I have two sticks of pc100 (not same brand either), so I bet thats what is causing my instability.
